We are seeking a dynamic senior-level career professional experienced in international development with expertise in proposal development, youth development, economic strengthening and gender. The Sr. Business Development Specialist will act as capture lead and technical writer on complex or strategically critical proposals with a value of over $1 million on behalf of ChildFund. In this role, the position collaborates with proposal managers, technical and finance staff in country offices as well as headquarter to complete successful large-scale applications.  S/he leads a proposal team and facilitates the entire proposal process including the bid/no-bid decision phase, capture efforts, developing and implementing proposal schedules, and oversees the development of both technical and cost proposals, ensuring a proposal’s successful on-time submission. A critical element of this position is to cultivate relationships with potential donors (US government, foundations and other bilaterals) and partners.  In addition, s/he will also engage with Africa’s Regional Grants and Contract Manager, Grants Management Officers at headquarter and country office project staff on improving the implementation of assigned large grants.  Successful candidates will have experience leading the proposal process, excellent writing skills, enjoy working in a team environment, be solution-oriented, and possess a great sense of humour.

Job Title: Senior Business Development Specialist

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepositioning

  • Identifies and cultivates relationships with high-value grant donors such as foundations, bi-laterals and US government in Africa in coordination with country offices where applicable
  • Identifies and cultivates relationships with potential partners and sub-partners
  • Develops a pipeline of potential opportunities in collaboration with country offices and headquarters’ Business Development team
  • Works with Global Human Resources to identify key proposal development consultants and potential key staff and maintains up to date database
  • Develop repository of technical briefs, case studies, capacity statements, past performance references, and other materials to showcase ChildFund’s work in these technical areas.
  • Represent ChildFund in relevant networks and conferences

Proposal Development

  • Act as capture lead and technical writer for proposals in the field of youth employability of $1 million or more in total award value.
  • Acts as technical lead in all stages proposal development process which includes cultivating relations with donors, identifying potential STTA and key personnel candidates, potential partners and relevant stakeholders; supporting design and implementation of field assessments, and leading proposal writing in coordination with HQ-based proposal manager.
  • Lead the proposal team in the brainstorming of responsive yet innovative programmatic design concepts, and ensure they are meaningfully translated into written content.
  • Facilitate proposal meetings.
  • Support the development of cost proposal and review budgets for cost realism and accuracy.

Post-Award Management

  • In collaboration with COs project teams, Grants Management Officers and Africa’s Regional Grants and Contracts Manager, support the smooth implementation of select high-value grants including startup and closure processes.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE 

  • At least 10 years of international development and/or non-profit experience required
  • At least 3 years in leadership roles in Africa working for donor agencies or development agencies (for-profit or non-profits) in the international development field
  • Technical expertise in the area of youth employability, economic strengthening and gender.
  • Demonstrates experience leading the writing of successful complex proposals in this field for a value of $2 million or more.
  • Knowledge of project design methodologies and proven ability to facilitate proposal development and technical design process.
  • Exceptional ability to act as capture lead being able to: 1) communication, both written and verbal, 2) leadership 3) team management, 4) negotiation, both within and outside the organisation, and 5) time-management skills (especially when facing tight deadlines).
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of USG donors (i.e. USAID, DOL, State, etc.) multilateral, foundations, and other institutions’ grant-making
  • Shows ability to analyse budgets and provide inputs.
  • Outstanding writing skills in English, analytical capacity, and attention to detail.
  • In-depth knowledge of Word, Advanced Excel skills, Powerpoint, Visio, Project, and Adobe. Prior experience working with SalesForce and SharePoint is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and is resourceful ‐ to develop and build network of contacts with donors and peer organisations
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time
  • French fluency is a plus.

EDUCATION                                                      

Master’s degree in education, business development, microfinance, economics, youth development, international development, international relations, social work or a related field
