TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR RECRUITING AN INTERN IN KAOMA

Background

Concern has been working in Zambia since 2002 implementing livelihoods, HIV and AIDS and nutrition programmes. In Western Province, Mongu, Limalunga, Luampa, Kaoma, Nalolo and Senenga districts, Concern is implementing the Integrated Poverty Reduction and Women Empowerment Programme (IPRWEP) that mainly targets women and focuses on household asset strengthening, capacity building of local institutions, women’s empowerment, nutrition promotion and disaster risk reduction (DDR). The Conservation Agriculture (CA) Project promotes sustainable agriculture with the poorest farmers in this marginal areas. In the Mayukwayukwa Refugee Settlement in Kaoma District, Concern also partners with UNHCR to support the local integration of former Angolan Refugees. In Central Province, Mumbwa district, Concern Zambia is implementing the Realigning Agriculture to Improve Nutrition Project (RAIN) that focuses on reduction in prevalence of stunting in children by promoting improved nutrition during the critical period from conception to 23 months of age. Concern is also a member of the consortium (SUN Fund) responsible for the scale up of nutrition under the Most Critical 1000 Days Programme through capacity building and support to the key line Ministries, nutrition planning and activities in 14 pilot Districts and support for related operations and innovations research.

IPRWEP work mainly with the women groups and in Kaoma districts there are 84 groups and a total of 1013 members. With the project ending in 2016, Concern has put up strategies to improve the capacity of the groups to support their members in terms of accessing inputs and engaging in income generating activities beyond IPRWEP. One such strategy is to facilitate formal registration of the groups with government agency.

Concern Kaoma is looking to engage the services of an Intern who will support the acting Programme Support Officer in overseeing the group registration process.

Main duties of the Intern

  • Support close monitoring of the work of the facilitators from the Ministry of Community Development Mother and Child Health for the group registration to ensure that it is in line with the agreed Terms of reference.
  • Support in organising trainings for targeted group members.
  • Carry out regular field visits to monitor the performance of the trained beneficiaries and provide on the job technical support.
  • Report monthly on activities, challenges, lessons learnt and best practices,
  • Attend meetings with stakeholders as required by the programme to ensure synergy between the different interventions.

Expected Outputs (Deliverables)

  • A constitution drawn up for each participating group
  • Registration forms filled in and sent for processing with the Registrar of Societies in Lusaka
  • Lists of group names, number of beneficiaries in each group and names of group leaders identified and confirmed during the workshops
  • An undertaking from the Ministry confirming on-going technical support for the registered groups

Requirements:

  • In pursue of a  degree/diploma in development studies, rural development or related field
  • Some experience working with women groups or small scale farmers will be an added advantage
  • Commitment to work in remote location with a minimum service
  • Good understanding of rural development programmes, gender/equality issues
  • Good facilitation  skill
  • Fluent in English language and able to speak at least one of the local languages spoken in Kaoma (Mbunda, Luvale, Lozi, Luchazi or Nkoya)
  • Ability to ride a motorcycle, with valid licence will be an added advantage
  • The Intern should be one pursuing a degree/diploma in development studies or social work from a reputable tertiary institution in Zambia.

Duration and location: For August 10th to   18th   of September 2015, in Kaoma district

Lines of Communication: 

The Intern will work closely with the District Programme Coordinator for Concern Kaoma. S/he will however also be in constant consultation with Brian Phiri the acting Programme Support Officer for IPRWEP Kaoma office.
