TITLE: Assistant Field Operations Manager

CONTRACT: Fixed Term Contract (1 year) Minimal chance of renewal

LOCATION: Kalabo, Liuwa Plain National Park, Zambia

Job overview:

The Assistant Field Operations Manager (AFOM) is a key member of the Liuwa Plain National Park (LPNP) team, playing an integral role as a link between Senior Management, Department Heads and on the ground operations. The positions’ responsibilities vary greatly; these include but are not limited to:

1. Logistical Management:

Assist the Field Operations Manager with all logistical management aspects of LPNP, including assisting Law Enforcement, Workshop, Community and Administration Departments to achieve their objectives
Implementation of day to day operational tasks and special projects as determined by management.

2. Park Infrastructure and Asset Management:

The management and maintenance of all AP building facilities
The management and maintenance of road infrastructure and associated signage within the Park
3. Conservation Management

Assisting with implementation of all conservation goals of LPNP

4. Uniform and Equipment Stores

The management of the LPNP Uniform and Field Equipment Stores, including issuing and receiving of uniform and equipment, and keeping accurate records of store stock
Overseeing the management of workshop equipment stores at Winela.

5. Staff Management and Supervision

Day to day management of staff under your supervision, setting tasks and overseeing these, ensuring exemplary work standards, maintain staff discipline through the company’s code of conduct and conditions of service, and overseeing general staff related administration

6. Overseeing the workshop in the absence of the Workshop Manager

7. Overseeing all operations in the absence of the Field Operations Manager

8. Any further reasonable and lawful request made to you by the FOM or Park Manager

Basic Qualifications:

  • A suitable tertiary qualification in Environmental Management, Wildlife Management, Conservation Management, Forestry or other relevant qualification
  • A Degree will be an advantage
  • 5 years’ work experience, with at least 2 years as a Supervisor
  • A valid professional driving licence (motor vehicle) with no restrictions or endorsements.
  • A heavy duty motor vehicle and motorbike licence would be an advantage
  • Competent written and spoken English.

Capabilities, competencies and experience needed for the job

  1. Demonstrable experience of at least 3 years in operational management
  2. Strong organisational skills and an ability to manage several tasks at one time
  3. Good working knowledge of buildings, roads, vehicles, workshop machinery and tools, and the maintenance thereof
  4. Thrive under pressure and can work towards strict deadlines
  5. Strong disciplined character, willing to work long hours in a remote environment, with limited resources
  6. Ability to problem solve, make do with what one has to solve often complicated problems
  7. A strong leader, who can persevere, with excellent people management skills and an ability to work with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds
  8. Fluent English (written and spoken)
  9. Good computer and report writing skills
  10. Good team player and experience in managing teams
  11. Knowledge of wildlife industry and standards

Key measures and targets

  1. Park Operations run smoothly with limited disruptions
  2. Infrastructure is well maintained and cared for
  3. Tourism Camps operate at an extremely high standard, roads are navigable and easy to drive
  4. Assets are adequately cared for and preventative maintenance limits both breakdowns and costs
  5. Annual and long term conservation management goals are met
  6. Departments and staff are equipped with uniform, tools and equipment required to achieve LPNP goals
  7. Staff morale high and work ethic above average
  8. Administration is up to date and accurately completed
