Lumwana Mining Company Limited (LMC), a copper mining company owned by Barrick Gold Corporation is situated in the North Western region of Zambia, some 300 km west of the Zambian Copperbelt and 95 km southwest of the provincial capital of Solwezi. The mine is a multi-pit, multi-staged operation mining approximately 100MT of ore and waste per annum and producing copper concentrates containing an average of 120,000 tons of copper metal per year over a twenty (20) year mine life, making Lumwana the largest single open cut copper mine in Africa. The Company is now looking for an experienced and qualified individual to be considered for the position of Geology Technician.

Role Summary

Reporting to the Exploration Geologist, you will be accountable to the Exploration Geologist for sampling duties, pre-screening of samples using portable analyzers.Your duties will include but not limited to the following:

Responsibilities

  • Carry out a job in a professional and safe manner.
  • Carefully collect and transport drill core for processing.
  • Accurately process drill core including orientations and depth markers in preparation for sampling and geological logging.
  • Accurately sample drill core using a diamond core saw
  • Use initiative to achieve and maintain a high quality of work.
  • Maintain clear communication with the geologists on all work related matters.
  • Regularly clean and maintain sampling equipment of contaminants.
  • Correctly label the sample bags in advance of drilling.
  • Comply with QA/QC sampling procedures i.e. duplicates, standard, and blanks.
  • Maintain sample lay down area in a neat and organized manner. Discard unwanted samples as requested.
  • Complete all associated paperwork correctly and legibly.
  • Conduct regular stock take of consumables to ensure a ready supply for continuous operation. Notify supervisor of low stock levels

Experience & Qualifications

  • Grade twelve certificate
  • Exploration drilling experience preferred. Mining experience advantageous.
  • Good planning and organizational skills.
  • High level of responsibility and shows accountability for own actions.
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Be able to work alone or part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work in an efficient manner
  • Follow instructions clearly and ask for clarification if not clear.
  • Be self-motivated with a high level of commitment.
  • Must have valid drivers license
