Job Title: Vice President Mining

To manage the operations of an Underground Mine, Processing Unit and other support functions, so as achieve the KIBU business plan targets, while adhering to set Safety and Quality standards.

 The key roles & deliverables includes :-

  • Lead HSE management, underground Mine and Concentrator operations, to optimize mining and processing activities, in line with the Unit’s BP.
  • Ensure that inputs to the production planning process are accurate and realistic for short and long term plans, as well as for daily monitoring.
  • Establish an effective plan increasing current levels of production.
  • Review and analyze the resource management model for the Mine and to develop an effective de-watering programme.
  • Implement a robust contracting strategy for the Mine, including optimizing mining methods used and equipment selection.
  • Build a strong mining team and create underground mining excellence.
  • Collaborate with the Supply chain function in forging key partnerships with Contractors, Vendors and Suppliers for achievement of short and long-term business objectives cost effectively.
  • Improve the Business Unit’s performance through monitoring, feedback and continuously improving people and processes; this to include employee capability development, talent pipeline development and succession planning
  • Ensure that financial management systems are in place and effective for value adding production.
  • To guide cost management across the three operating units to ensure cost control measures are adhered to in order to operate within the business plan.
  • Ensure safety and health of employees and equipment in order to comply with both legal requirements and KCM environmental management plan.
  • Implements and monitors quality control standards and procedures consistent with the Unit’s objectives.
  • Monitor and ensure that business plan enablers are timely implemented in order to achieve business plan set targets.
  • Recommends budget requirements and takes action to guarantee effective performance within approved budgets.
  • Participates in senior Management meetings involving policy with emphasis on those decisions that affect the operations.
  • Maintain networks of external contacts that enable the KIBU to benchmark its practices against other industry players
  • Engages in the typical responsibilities of a manager requiring planning, evaluating, organizing, integrating, and controlling.

Keeping abreast with the modern trends in mining management initiatives, techniques and strategies. The Job holder is required to have in-depth knowledge and understanding of the global mining business environment.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

  • BSc in Mining Engineering or related relevant Engineering degree
  • Postgraduate qualifications (MSc in Engineering or Business management)
  • Minimum 25 years of work experience in the mining industry, 15 of which should have been in both underground mining and processing environments.
    Wet mine management experience ideal
  • A successful track record of implementing HSE best practice.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of other key technical functions, including environmental management, mine design, mine equipment performance, ore body modelling, etc.
  • Knowledge of the international (ISO) quality, safety and environmental management standards.
  • Proven ability to manage a multi-cultural workforce and to work collaboratively with teams.
  • Successful track record in managing a major base metals mining operation with shafts and metallurgical operations.
  • Natural disposition for coaching and mentoring of junior talent.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills at all levels.
  • Sound financial & techno-commercial skills.
