The Population Council is an international, nonprofit, nongovernmental institution that seeks to improve the well-being and reproductive health of current and future generations around the world and to help achieve a humane, equitable, and sustainable balance between people and resources. The Council conducts biomedical, social science, and public health research and helps build research capacities in developing countries. Established in 1952, the Council is governed by an international board of trustees. Its New York headquarters supports a global network of regional and country offices. We are seeking an individual to fill the position described. It will also create an enabling environment by engaging the community through activities that promote and support girls’ secondary schooling, for reading, and for gender equality. The Population Council is hiring research assistants for GirlsRead! project. The position is a temporal assignment for a period of 30 days. The research assistant will be assigned schools where they will conduct interviews to randomly selected girls. The research assistants will also be required to ensure they obtain informed consent for all participant before interviewing them.

Job Titles: Research Assistant in Ndola & Lusaka

Responsibilities

  • Conduct interviews with participants using tablet-based data collection system
  • Administer informed consent to all participants and store all consent forms securely
  • Ensure privacy and confidentiality of study participants
  • Ensure accurate and full completion of all forms and report any issues to the field coordinator
  • Participate in regular meetings with the field coordinator
  • Maintain study equipment and materials
  • This position involves extensive travel in the selected schools and will be based in Chingola, Ndola and Lusaka

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in a social field
  • Experience conducting social science research
  • Experience working with local populations
  • Experience conducting interviews to girls 12 years and above in Grade 7
  • Good written and spoken knowledge of English, Nyanja and Bemba
  • Experience working with computer-assisted interviewing platforms, a plus
