The holder of the position shall be responsible for development and execution of AAZ’s Communications Strategy, and coordinating and managing the development and production of communications materials for all Programme initiatives. Further, the job holder will provide leadership in developing the advocacy strategy, build the capacity of civil society partners in order to strengthen and deepen their involvement in advocacy, policy influencing and decision-making

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

a) Communications

  • Formulation and implementation of communication strategy, policies and procedures to provide information, education and communication support to AAZ;
  • Strengthen media relations to give poor communities; especially women and youth a platform to raise their concerns on rights issues;
  • Providing proactive public relations and enhancing the corporate image of the AAZ;
  • Organizing and coordinating corporate and public relations events, press releases, media liaisons, conferences, and press briefs on the AAZ’s programmes and activities;
  • Development and publishing of documentaries including success stories, annual reports, press releases, articles, policy papers and news briefs in collaboration with Programmes and fundraising teams;
  • Management of corporate branding, production and distribution of in-house newsletters and other public publications to raise public awareness;
  • Coordinate the development of policy briefs and strategies that inform stakeholders about the policy position of Action Aid Zambia and partners;
  • Advising the management on key public relations issues;
  • Maintain and uphold documentation, branding and profile of AAZ and ensure compliance among staff and partners;
  • Build capacity of staff in basic interpersonal, public relations and communication and client- relationship management skills;
  • Support the process of systematic collection of stories of Change and case studies by engaging partner organizations and LRPs;
  • Liaising with ICT to ensure maintenance and updating of information on the HIVE and website including blogs and other social media;
  • Support internal teams in the development of key messaging for resource mobilization and Programme activities;

b) Campaigns

  • Provide guidance in identifying key thematic issues on which Action Aid Zambia and its partners should focus their advocacy efforts;
  • Design and package information in a way to influence government (national, district level) on policy and legislation, potential donors and the general public who are keen to follow AAZ’s work;
  • Responsible and accountable for planning, implementation and delivery of quality campaigns and advocacy; from local to national, to global;
  • Ensure effective integration of advocacy and campaigns work in programme planning and delivery of work;
  • Develop the Country Programme Campaigns and Advocacy strategy to ensure set objectives in the CSP well communicated;

a) QUALIFICATIONS

Appointment to the position will be made from persons who have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Communications, Public Relations, Media studies , Journalism or their equivalent from a recognized University;
  • Postgraduate diploma in Journalism for candidates with a non journalism degree;
  • Have at least seven (7) years’ experience in developing and implementing Corporate Communications programmes of which at least three(3) years must have been as Communication Officer in a comparable position with similar responsibilities in like organizations;
  • Experience in an advocacy role and communications is highly desirable;

b) KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Excellent working knowledge of MS Office, desktop publishing graphical designing through Adobe Photoshop Suite, Dreamweaver, freehand, illustrator, InDesign and Quark Xpress;
  • Demonstrable experience in advocacy and campaigns on women rights; governance, resilient livelihoods and other themes of AAZ’s work
  • Familiarity with the standards of writing, copy editing, and proofreading; ability to improve written content with attention to detail;
  • Assertive and a team player.
  • Proactive in collecting information and developing stories of change.
  • Excellent communication skills. Ability to package information in a way that builds credibility and influence.
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to communicate complex policy & programme issues in simple terms;
  • Excellent relationship management, negotiation and influencing skill
