Afri Mining (Pvt) Ltd T/a ZIMZAM PLANT HIRE, is a Zambian company, located in Chilanga, Zambia. ZIMZAM has been in operation for 10 years and at its core, its business is to provide the highest quality of earthmoving services throughout the entire Southern African region. Our preferred choice of earthmoving equipment is Volvo.

ZIMZAM believes that its employees are its most valuable asset and as a result, we hold ourselves to the highest safety standards and have a zero tolerance policy toward unsafe behavior. ZIMZAM has a staff contingent of over 90 personnel. All of the staff, including the operators, have fully comprehensive insurance whilst on and off the various mining sites. ZIMZAM is currently providing Mining services (Drilling and Blasting) as well as Haulage for Lafarge Zambia in chilanga.

We are looking for a reliable Head of Safety ensure everyone in the company complies with health and safety laws. You will also be responsible for establishing policies that will create and maintain a safe workplace.

As a safety manager you must have excellent attention to detail to identify hazards. You will also be able to discover opportunities for improving conditions and execute various safety programs. The ability to communicate guidelines to a multidisciplinary workforce is essential.

The goal is to ensure the workplace meets all legal expectations and actively supports occupational health and safety.

1. Head of Safety

Key Responsibilities

• Evolving Health and Safety framework and governance.
• Working proactively with Directors and Heads of Department and other key team members to establish and maintain a programme of continuous improvement within their areas of responsibility.
• Ensuring robust incident reporting processes are in place and overseeing the investigation of any safety critical incidents.
• Recommending to the ZIMZAM management of any improvements needed to deliver safer working environments.
• Supporting the identification and management of risks.
• Monitor, evaluate and review existing, new and upcoming Health and Safety legislation and ensure that ZIMZAM has systems and procedures in place to meet legal compliance.
• Working with ZIMZAM third party installers to ensure consistency of practice as well as the management of appropriate contractual and operational controls.
• Overseeing internal and external Safety reporting.
• Representing ZIMZAM at external industry and safety forums.

Essential skills and experience:

• Experience of introducing policies, procedures, processes and systems effectively; and enabling positive cultural change
• A proven track record of developing productive relationships with a variety of stakeholders and capable of influencing at all levels
• Must have an excellent working knowledge of the English language (spoken and written)
• Must have a demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced and multi-cultural setting.
• Must have demonstrated ability and knowledge to set up HEALTH and Safety Management systems.

Ideally you will have…

• Significant experience (Minimum of 8 years working experience ) of operating at a senior HSE leadership level preferably within the mining industry with internal and subcontracted field operatives carrying out safety critical roles.
• A Diploma level qualification in HSE
• Experience of managing, motivating and developing a high performing team
• Grade 12 Credit or better
• Must have Computer proficiency especially in Microsoft word and Excel
