Assistant Accountant (05)
Job Purpose
To reconcile receipts and payments made to University and various cashbooks and bank accounts to aid management decision making.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Reconciles the cashbooks with bank statements of various bank accounts in order to maintain an up to date and accurate status.
- Undertakes posting of journal vouchers/entries to the general ledger resulting from the potential variance between the cashbooks and bank statements i.e., bank charges duplicated payments/receipts, etc.
- Carries out investigations resulting from queries raised by supervisor or section heads.
- Participates in the year-end stock taking to enhance efficiency.
- Orients and supervises newly employed staff and supervision of same to ensure adherence to approved set standards and procedures.
- Prepares monthly commitment and actual expenditure returns to the school/unit assigned to him/her.
- Provides relevant information/data on budgets and actual expenditure to management as demanded.
- Secretary to the departments senior staff committee and prepares personal assessment document for submission at the appointments, promotion, and disciplinary committee.
- Prepares periodical ledgers accounting reports on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis for management decision making.
- Performs any other duties lawfully assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Form V or Grade 12 certificate with 5 “O” levels credits in 5 subjects including Mathematics and English
- Minimum of Level Il in ACCA/CIMA/ZICA or its equivalent.
- Minimum of 3 years of working experience in accounts or financial management.
Required Competencies and Behavioural Attributes
- Must possess accounting skills to competently aid review of corporate financial management ledger systems in liaison with superior and others except on matters that require extensive consultation.
- Ability to communicate orally and assist in preparing monthly commitment and actual expenditure return to prepare trial balance and final financial statements monthly, quarterly and annually for submission to superiors.
