The University of North Carolina – Global Projects Zambia (UNC-GPZ) is studying preterm birth and its prevention among pregnant women in Zambia. The Assistant Research Manager will work with assigned study teams on all aspects of research conduct including study planning and implementation, regulatory affairs, financial management, and procurement.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following:

Research Administration:

  • Support investigators, study coordinators and other study staff as needed to ensure that studies are conducted in accordance with the protocol, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and international regulations.
  • Monitor project expenses and assist with financial reporting in consultation with investigators and administrative staff.
  • Oversee the submission and approval of routine petty cash and participant reimbursement reconciliations as required to ensure the adequate flow of project monies.
  • Manage procurement and maintenance of study equipment/supply inventory and storage.
  • Assist with preparation and monitoring of regulatory submissions to UNZA REC, UNC IRB,
    MOH, ZAMRA, and others as needed for assigned research studies.
  • Prepare study-related reports/presentations as requested for study funders or other
    interested parties.

Communication:

  • Communicate with the investigators and coordinator efficiently and effectively on any issues related to the accurate and successful implementation of assigned studies through a variety of mediums when necessary.
  • Collaborate with sponsor representatives as needed.
  • Communicate with fellow staff members openly and honestly about study progress, issues,
    and/or problems that may arise.
  • Actively participate in problem solving with study team members.
  • Promote team building and work collegially as part of the study team.
  • Effectively collaborate with community and district staff as necessary.
  • Oversee the resolution of any conflicts and/or disputes regarding staff members with
    guidance and input from Human Resources staff.

Training

  • Acquire and maintain an in-depth knowledge of assigned study protocols.
  • Complete all required training, including routine Human Subjects Protection and Good
    Clinical Practices training.
  • Participate in hiring and training of study staff as needed.
  • Identify training needs and organize training programs as necessary to update/ maintain
    competence of study staff.

Other

  • Perform high quality work at all times.
  • Attend workshops, conferences and other meetings as requested.

TERMS OF REFERENCE

TITLE – Assistant Research Manager REPORTS TO – Investigator of Record LOCATION – University Teaching Hospital (UTH)

  • Any other duties or responsibilities found necessary for the successful implementation and functioning of assigned studies.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a health-related field plus at least five years of experience in research
    administration
  • Experience in financial management and procurement
  • Proficiency with MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated history of working effectively with diverse teams
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and set priorities

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with regulatory procedures in Zambia
  • Basic understanding of clinical trials, epidemiology, and public health research
