Barrick Gold Corporation Zambia Job: Exploration Geologist


Lumwana Mining Company Limited (LMC), a copper mining company owned by Barrick Gold Corporation is situated in the North Western region of Zambia, some 300 km west of the Zambian Copperbelt and 95 km south west of the provincial capital of Solwezi. The mine is a multi-pit, multi staged operation mining approximately 100MT of ore and waste per annum and producing copper concentrates containing an average of 120,000 tonnes of copper metal per year over a twenty (20) year mine life, making Lumwana the largest single open cut copper mine in Africa. The Company is now looking for an experienced and qualified individual to be considered for the position of Exploration Geologist – Short term.
Job Title: Exploration Geologist – Short term
Location: Lumwana Mine, Solwezi, Zambia.
Reporting to: Resource Reserve Coordinator
Role Summary
Reporting to the Resource Reserve Coordinator or his delegate, you will coordinate the efficient and safe execution of Mine Exploration programs in active mining areas and surrounding leases.  With this knowledge you will assist with the interpretation of high quality geological data, for the construction of geological models representing the Lumwana ore bodies
Responsibilities
  • Ensure site standards and procedures are complied with to ensure the collection of representative samples.
  • Collect geological data through chip logging, mapping and use of portable devices.
  • Assist with preparation and interpretation of geological sections.
  • Report and correct QAQC errors of assay and geological logging.
  • Organise and validate geological data.
  • Supervise earth moving contractors to ensure drill pads and work area access is prepared in accordance with site standards and in advance of drilling requirements.
  • Supervise Field Technicians to ensure safe and efficient execution of field tasks.
  • Complete daily drill summary reports including reconciliations of daily contractor plods.
  • Seek continuous improvement of field operations.
  • Undertake field mapping to improve understanding of deposit geology and its relationship to mineralization 1styles and occurrences.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science- majoring in Geology
  • Member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia
  • Experience (3 years) in exploration geology associated with large open cut mines.
  • Demonstrate ability to drive a light vehicle and hold a current drivers licence.
  • Good computer skills with the ability to use integrated management systems, word processing, presentation and spreadsheet applications. Able to exhibit proficiency in standard mining software ie Vulcan. Database applications i.e. AcQuire, Microsoft Access and Microsoft Office Suite.
