Position: REDD+ Technical Officer

Contract: 1 year renewable Location: Mfuwe, Zambia

Reporting To: Managing Director

BioCarbon Partners (BCP) is a dynamic African-registered and headquartered REDD+ project development and management company. The organisation is currently recruiting a REDD+ Technical Officer to support USAID/funded Community Forests Program activities in Eastern Province, Zambia.

The candidate will be required to work independently in remote areas in support of project management and methodological compliance.

Key requirements and responsibilities:

Qualifications:

  • Graduate or post graduate qualification in environmental sciences
  • Good knowledge of MS Office suite or similar software
  • Driver’s Licence with off-road driving skills
  • Team Player with the ability to assist with project management
  • Ability to train novice teams in all technical aspects of REDD+ implementation
  • Day to day operational team back-stopping, capacity building and administrative management
  • Development of long-term forest protection agreements
  • Provide key technical assistance to field teams particularly in terms of project area eligibility
  • Assist with design and compliance of jurisdictional level REDD+ projects
  • Train and assist teams in critical aspects of standards such as additionality, non-permanence risk and FPIC
  • Engage with Government partners and stakeholders
  • Ability to work in remote areas for long periods of time, African field experience a must.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Assisting with REDD+ project viability assessments
  • Report writing and input into project development plans and reports.
  • Assist field teams with validation and verification audit preparations.

Working Conditions: The position advertised is for a REDD+ Technical Officer to join the BCP team. The successful candidate will be required to assist Conservation and Community Engagement Teams in Eastern Province in Zambia as part of a large scale REDD+ project aiming to conserve 700 000ha of Zambian woodlands. The candidate can expect to spend a substantial amount of time in remote wilderness areas with only basic facilities. The candidate will be based out of Mfuwe, Eastern Province, Zambia — a small tourism town with limited amenities.

The candidate will require good communication skills in order to coordinate activities with other managers and ensure constructive inputs into REDD+ standards compliance. The candidate will support the Conservation and Community Engagement Teams and ensure consistent development of long-term forest protection agreements in support of conservation and livelihood goals which are compliant with REDD+ standards. Efficient networking and communication of these approaches to the BCP constituency will be needed. This role is a combination of capacity-building and working directly to achieve impact.

Required Competencies:

  • Practical experience of REDD+ implementation
  • Expert knowledge of REDD+ standards and methodologies including Verified Carbon Standard, Community, Climate and Biodiversity Standard, UN-REDD and World Bank MF and ISFL.
  • First hand experience of VCS and CCB verifications will be an added advantage.
  • Excellent analytical skills including advanced use of MS Excel and other spreadsheet software
  • Other PC skills to include Microsoft Office Suite products as well as various Google Apps and the use of Android smart phones.
  • Good report writing skills
  • Ability to operate smart phones to collect field data.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with people from different cultures.
  • Logistics skills including fleet management, work planning and equipment sourcing.
  • Demonstrated ability to train people from differing backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Experience living and working in Africa.

Qualifications:

Graduate or post graduate qualification in the environmental sciences from an accredited institution with a minimum of two years practical REDD+ project experience.
