Location: Based in Lusaka and potential travel to 10 Zambian Provinces
Start Date: Immediate
Contract: 40 Days (February/March/April 2020 at 3 or 4 days / week) with possibility to extend contract on a similar basis for further project phases

About Cities and Infrastructure for Growth Zambia (CIGZambia):

About us: Cities and Infrastructure for Growth, “CIGZambia”, is a new, 5-year, multi-country DFID programme designed to support inclusive economic growth and job creation. In the first phase, the three initial countries will be: Zambia, Uganda and Myanmar. In Zambia, the programme is expected to be between £10-15 million providing high quality technical assistance and policy influencing to governments, municipal authorities and public agencies in three key pillars:

  1. Creating productive cities through urban development
  2. Improving access to reliable and affordable power
  3. Increasing investment into infrastructure services

The client: The Power Africa: Beyond the Grid Fund for Zambia (BGFZ) is an ambitious multi-year program aiming to increase energy access, improve livelihoods and catalyse economic activity in rural and peri-urban areas. The BGFZ aims to bring modern energy services to at least 167,000 households – translating to one million Zambians – by 2021.

About you:

  • We are seeking a bioenergy consultant for the Bioenergy Diagnostic Study for our client REEEP/BGFZ (The Market Scoping Report and Country Analysis Report for Zambia will act as the basis for design of a second financing round or rounds for Zambia (BGFA – Zambia II) and inform the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ) on pathway and strategy towards the targets until 2030.
  • The biggest benefits of this role are, having to contribute to shaping the potential bioenergy market in Zambia by defining the scope and potential for growth in this sector.
  • You have expertise (feedstock, technology solutions) in biogas (livestock, landfill/municipality, human waste, industrial wastewater), biomass (food process residues, agriculture/agroforestry residues) and waste-to-energy.
  • The biggest challenge of this role will be quantification of market data given the data availability and accuracy.
  • The team will be made up of experts with expertise around:
    • Farmland / bioenergy plants, forest land/wetland plants, bioenergy technology for power/heat/transport (small, medium, large-scale, community demand assessment, institutional/utility demand assessment, gender, bioenergy finance, behavior change communication, finance modelling, community income revenue value chains, GIS, and legal and policy.
  • The team, in general, describes themselves as passionate, adaptable and ultimately, capable.

About the Role

Main purpose and scope of work:

  • The main role of the consultant will be to provide the services of developing content for the envisioned bioenergy diagnostic report (heat and power, biofuels);
  • Baseline supply side bioenergy technologies; and,
  • Baseline demand side bioenergy segments e.g. agriculture residues (forest/weed waste, maize residues, cassava, sugar cane, cotton, tobacco, vegetables, soybeans, groundnuts, wheat, fruits, ethanol silage, etc.).

Duties and key responsibilities:

  • Conduct research to obtain factual information and authentic detail on content.
  • Develop content for the report.
  • Develop business models for cooking stoves, biogas, biofuels and biomass.
  • Write, edit and proofread report and documents.
  • Present drafts to team leader and incorporate feedback.
  • Work with group members to shape the material so it can be submitted.
  • Incorporate feedback into working version of reports.
  • Consult with other work colleagues within the working environment.
  • Observe professional conduct in the workplace.
  • Keep time.
  • Provide other miscellaneous services related to or outside job description as per Team Leader instructions.

General responsibilities:

  • Complying with company code of conduct and policies and procedures.

Qualifications (skills & experience required):

  • Master’s degree in any bioenergy related programme.
  • International experience in the field of biomass and or research is an added advantage.
  • Any prior experience working with DFID programs, African bioenergy experience or working for bioenergy combined heat and power (CHP) factory.
  • Should be computer literate with command in Microsoft office (MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint).
  • Capable of working in a group and with people.
  • A driver’s licence is a plus.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and capabilities.
  • Capable of sitting for hours behind a computer screen to put in the work and conduct field work in rural areas/environment.
  • Able to put in the extra hours of work if required to.
  • Able to commute to-and-from the workplace on time.
