Build It International Job Vacancy: Centre for Excellence Project Manager


Build It International is a UK and Zambia based NGO operating in Zambia since 2006. Our core activity is to train young men and women in construction skills so that they can go on to earn a living. We deliver the training through our programme of community building projects including primary schools, secondary schools and health clinics. By the end of 2017 we will have completed almost 40 projects and trained over 500 men and women in construction skills with a 97% pass rate.

We are now in the second year of the construction of a training ‘Centre for Excellence’, 12km north of Lusaka and are seeking a talented and experienced project manager to manage the planning and delivery of the centre.

Overall: To be responsible for the delivery of Build It International’s Centre for Excellence from planning through to design and construction. This role will involve coordinating various stakeholders in the UK and Zambia for the successful delivery of the project.

Specific Responsibilities:

Planning and coordination

  • Adhere to and help develop the overall project delivery plan
  • Coordinate and liaise with the Centre for Excellence Steering Group, internal and external stakeholders for the effective and efficient delivery of the project
  • Gain planning permission, organise connection of utilities and ensure all other legal and administrative duties are carried out for the construction of the Centre for Excellence
  • Ensure the drawings, site plan and master plan are produced in line with the design brief
  • Work with the Country Director to identify and develop partnerships and invite relevant external stakeholders to contribute to the project

Project Management

  • Develop, maintain and update the programme to meet pre-construction and construction targets
  • Manage the production of the budget for all phases of construction
  • Monitor and manage the budget during construction through regular and timely forecasting to ensure the project is delivered within budget
  • Adhere to BII processes and systems for project management
  • Work effectively with Finance and Procurement to ensure timely delivery of materials on site
  • Manage the tendering of contracts and the selection of contractor(s)
  • Produce weekly reports on project progress
  • Ensure all statutory and BII inspections whether internal or by a third party are scheduled and carried out in a timely manner so as not to delay, incur costs, or cause risk to BII.
  • Work with the BII project delivery team including site agents and Construction Operations Manager to ensure the planning and construction is delivered on time, to budget and of high quality
  • Work with BII Trainer to ensure training and site work is coordinated.

Project health and safety of all personnel on site:

  • Following health and safety protocols both BII and Statutory
  • On-going health and safety risk assessment when BII is managing work on site. This includes consideration of BII personnel, Contractor’s personnel, Client’s personnel, and any other visitors to the site at any time.

Line Management and Key Relationships

The role reports on a day to day basis to the Construction Operations Manager and works closely with:

  • Country Director
  • Financial Manager and the Finance and Administration Officer
  • Logistics Officer/Procurement Officer
  • External UK and Zambia stakeholders and delivery partners

 

Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum: Advanced Certificate in Building Project Management, higher degree qualifications in a related field an advantage.
  • Minimum of 5 years work experience in managing projects
  • Previous experience of managing projects from planning to delivery
  • Exceptional planning and problem-solving skills
  • Budget management experience on projects of a similar scale
  • Experience of successfully working with and coordinating a team of people
  • High level of communication and team working skills
  • Demonstrable experience of the ability to present ideas and negotiate
  • Experience of working on sustainable building projects and/or a keen interest in sustainable buildings
  • Excellent IT skills in Excel, Word and Microsoft Project
