JOB DESCRIPTION FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL MATHS CURRICULUM SPECIALIST

Job Title: Primary School Maths Curriculum Specialist

Contract Duration: 4 month contract

Location: Camara Education Zambia, Lusaka, Zambia

Position Reports to Irish Aid Project Manager

Background

Camara Zambia has operated in Zambia since 2005 and has since supplied computers and support to numerous schools across the country. Camara Zambia works with the Republic of Zambia Ministry of General Education, and other stakeholders in the area of integrating Information and Communication Technology to improve education.

Camara Zambia is currently focused on two provinces in Zambia: Lusaka, and Southern. In these provinces a workable model on the usage of ICT in educational institutions is being developed with the support and collaboration of the ministry. The provincial, district, and school administrations are the main collaborators in the implementation of Camara Zambia’s programme.

The Camara Education -Irish Aid Project

Camara Zambia began implementation of a three-year, Irish Aid funded project in January 2018. This project is targeted at the Junior Secondary grades, with a particular focus on improving student results in Maths and Computer Studies and positively affecting transition into Senior Secondary. The Maths component is focused on implementing a Maths solution, supporting the national curriculum, that will address the needs of Junior Secondary schools and ultimately be scalable beyond the initial pilot location. It aims to overcome the training and resource problems that affect Maths teachers. It will be piloted in 10 Junior Secondary schools in the Southern Province. The Maths solution consists of the following components:

  • Curriculum-aligned Maths content adapted from Khan Academy content, assessments and other sourced content on a learning platform that allows for assessment for and of learning;
  • Creation of digital bi-termly assessments to ensure there is constant benchmarking of student progress against the curriculum;
  • Real time in school reporting on learner progress against curriculum standards using results from digital assessments;
  • Provision of ICT hardware for in class learning to pilot schools;
  • Training of Maths teachers in ICT skills, student centred pedagogy and content integration;
  • Leadership training for school leaders and District and Provincial Education Officers;
  • Follow up mentorship and support for teachers on pedagogy, platform use and effective use of educational data for learner improvement and reporting to relevant ministry agencies.

Overview of the Role:

The Primary School Maths Curriculum Specialist is a new position within the Irish Aid project. The Curriculum Specialist contributes to achieving the set Irish Aid outcomes by mapping open source maths digital content to the Zambian primary school curriculum. As an Irish Aid project team member, the Curriculum Specialist is required to map and review the mapping of digital content from different sources to the Zambian curriculum. The Curriculum Specialist is expected to work efficiently, meeting quality standards and work against timelines. The Curriculum Specialist is required to provide regular reporting to the Irish Aid Project Manager and also required to complete other tasks as assigned by management.

Responsibilities:

Technical

  • Perform Mapping of all digital content relevant to Zambia Maths Curriculum with careful attention to detail;
  • Using tools and platform at his/her disposal to facilitate professional mapping process;
  • Review selected digital content Mapped
  • Approve selected digital content and upload to the different channels; and
  • Ensure mapping milestones and quality standards are met.

Administration

  • Coordinate and communicate regularly with the Irish Aid Project Manager, the Global Education Manager and other management as directed; and
  • Act with integrity to all translated content ensuring they reach appropriate channel.

General

  • Attend specific staff training and attain thorough understanding of all aspects of your role.

Key Competencies:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in mathematic (primary school maths teaching)
  • Proficiency with Ubuntu and Microsoft computer applications
  • Good teaching skills and mastery of the Zambian National Curriculum
  • Good teaching experience in Zambian schools and good understanding of the primary and secondary school contexts.
  • Passion for ICT integration into the teaching and learning
  • Strong interpersonal, and communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Fluency in English

Job requirements:

  • Holder of Bachelors degree in Education (B.Ed)
  • At least 5 years’ experience in Primary School Teaching – Maths subject
  • Experience working with international NGO and donors
  • Cross-cultural experience
  • Commitment to values and ethos of Camara Education
  • Experience working under limited supervision
  • Experience working in a team
