CARE is an International Non-Governmental relief and development organization, dedicated to fighting poverty and social injustice with a special emphasis on women and girls. CARE International Zambia has vacancies available under the Southern African Nutrition Initiative (SANI) Project. This is a Five-year Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) funded project (2016 – 2020) whose overall goal is to improve the nutritional status of women of reproductive age (15-49 years) and children under 5 years. The project is expected to contribute directly to the improved health of approximately 77,884 women, children and men directly, and over 361,112 individuals indirectly. SANI project will contribute to increased global impact on reducing child and maternal malnutrition through  integration of strategies that will enhance infant and young child feeding (IYCF) and maternal nutrition practices; food security; water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH); women’s empowerment; Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation (PHAST)/Community led Total sanitation (CLTS) and, maternal health.

CARE International in Zambia under its DFATD funded SANI Project is seeking to recruit qualified and experienced staff for the following position-:

Job Title: Development Coordinator – Gender – 1 position ( Mpika)

Purpose

Responsible for carrying out projects’ gender process management activities in the districts.

Accountabilities:  Within delegated authority, the Project Development Coordinator – Gender will be responsible for the following duties:

Main duties

  • Support Gender-related program planning and management which includes implementation and monitoring of Gender activities in Mpika and Shiwangandu districts
  • Preparation and dissemination of timely analytical and critical reports including periodic reports on the progress of Gender project activities, proposals for improvements in operation and the scope of Gender program;
  • Ensure compliance with CARE policies, criteria and procedures with respect to project implementation;
  • Implement the district level Gender processes and ensure timely inputs for reporting and accountability; constant liaison with M&E Officer for data analysis and documentation.
  • Engage in gender and other women empowerment related capacity building of the field level implementing partners
  • Perform any other duties as required for the success of the program

Coordination with other Stakeholders

  • Ensure planning, coordination and synergy across the program components (Nutrition/WASH/FS) Work.
  •  Work closely with the other INGOs, Local NGOs and Government counterparts, and build more partnerships;
  • Assist in developing strategies and policy guidance for gender capacity building that would enable the program record impact to women empowerment for Nutrition development
  • Develop and  Promote mechanisms for integrating gender across all project activities

Policy Engagement and Food and Nutrition aspects:

  • In consultation with the supervisor and CO management, seek ways to influence district gender policy and advocacy work.
  • Develop and evaluate alternative Gender program models to address maternal and young child under nutrition;
  • Develop innovative ways of addressing chronic and acute malnutrition in Zambia using appropriated gender approaches

 AUTONOMY AND AUTHORITY

The Gender coordinator is supervised by the Project Manager.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The Gender Coordinator of the program is based in Mpika and will make frequent visit to project sites with the project team, partners and NGOS in the context of the implementation of gender activities and monitoring and evaluation of program activities in General.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Gender studies with at least five years’ experience. BSc Degree in social sciences or any other related with at least three years’ experience will be an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing gender programmes in development settings Good knowledge of gender and women empowerment programmes and guidelines. Experience in Nutrition and Gender-related activities will be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of use of computers essential, including word processing and, spreadsheets
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good analytical and negotiating skills

Desirable Characteristics:

Well prepared and organized, undertake analytical work; ensure programs are well managed at programming and operational levels. The incumbent must have good analytical skills, resourceful, take initiative, good negotiating skills, work well with partners- team player.
