1 x Regional Business Development Manager (Zambia or Malawi)

The basic function of the Job:

The Business Development Manager is part of the organization’s Business Development Unit (BDU) responsible for contributing to securing funding from Multilateral donors( EU, USAID,CDC, DFID, World Bank), Foundations and Corporations at the Country level. The Business Development Manager (BDM) is responsible for tracking and identifying funding opportunities for the organization across several funders in the Country and in Southern Region. The BD manager works with the country team to develop resource mobilization plans, implement and executing the RM plans. The BD manager provides oversight to all activities proposal development activities including pre-solicitation/pre-proposal activities to proposal development and management. He/She contributes to the Organization’s external and internal fundraising efforts as they relate to a specific country. The position will report to the Country Director but be part of the Corporate Business Unit and may be called to support the proposal in other countries when needed.

Duties and Responsibilities;

Responsibilities will include, but not limited to the following:

1. Proposal Management

  • Lead and manage the development and writing of winning proposals for the Southern Africa region
  • Develop strategies for seeking new opportunities for field offices in Southern Africa region
  • Maintain close working relationships with Amref Health Africa – HQ Business development department to maximize resources and fundraising opportunities for Amref Health Africa
  • Collaborate with the SMT, identify high-level potential prospects, secure meetings and write concept papers and proposals in response to funding opportunities.
  • Information and intelligence gathering for new prospects of call for proposals

2. Donor Relations/Stewardship

  • Develop and implement stewardship plans for all donors and grants for the field offices
  • Responsible for fulfilling all donor requirements including (but not limited to): financial and narrative reporting, ongoing communications, facilitating field visits, etc.
  • Responsible for establishing trust with his or her donors, defining and upholding mutual expectations.

3. Collaboration:

  • Liaising with various Managers to ensure adequate quality and flow of concepts and proposals.
  • Ensure that all proposals developed to adhere to the three requirements of i) closing the gap between communities and the health system, ii) strengthen AMREF iii) contribute to the Research Agenda

4. Leadership: Leading/ supporting program staff in AMREF field offices to identify, design and develop funding proposals for new program interventions (field-specific or regional)

5. Capacity Building: Building in-house capacity for design, development, writing and review of concept notes and funding proposals, development of project documents and report writing

6. Research: Scanning the donor environment for new funding opportunities (project and program funding) in line with AMREF strategy

7. Growth & Development: Scoping the AMREF environment for concept notes that warrant development and ensure that development happens.

8. Support: Supporting the development of systems and tools for project and program management

9. Monitoring & Evaluation: Monitoring and evaluating program effectiveness to inform program development

10. Budget Management: Assist in developing a budget for regional and field offices. Collate reference documents and participate in interdepartmental planning/budgeting meetings

Qualifications, experience and key competencies required:

  • Master’s degree in Business or Human Development from an accredited institution, or their international equivalents. Bachelor’s Degree or its International Equivalent Required – Business Administration, Human Development Sciences, Communication, Marketing or Related Field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant proven work experience with global donors (US, EU, DFID, etc.), specifically to proposal development developing.
  • Experience in managing professional staff or comparable team management experience required.
  • Substantial consultative experience within International Non-Governmental Organization (INGO).
  • Able to scan the horizon for emerging issues; establish links and develop strategic relationships and knowledge with organizations that work with social determinants of health such as food security and trade.
  • Sufficient knowledge in strategic proposal development with a development organization in Africa.
  • Sound IT knowledge; word processing, spreadsheet, Databases, presentations and statistical applications
  • A strong command of English
  • Strong knowledge with USAID, DFID, EU and other funder’s strategies and regulations.
  • Expert level knowledge and past experience with resource and business development practices and reporting guidelines.
  • Strong knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures; the ability to apply that knowledge in varied situations.
  • Expert knowledge of project/process management.
  • Possess a full understanding of the organizational structure, policies and practices, and the impact on own area and the entire organization.
  • Excellent Analytical, Presentation, Communication and Reporting skills
  • Must have excellent Communication, Analytical, Diplomatic and Negotiation skills.
  • Able with an intermediate to complex level of technology. Able to multi-task, meets deadlines, and accomplishes goals.
