WeForest

WeForest is a fast-growing international non-profit association with headquarters in Belgium and legal entities in France, the USA, Ethiopia, and Zambia. Our aim is to demonstrate, through the restoration of entire regions, that well-planned tree planting and reforestation can be the solutions to today’s biggest challenge: climate change. The organization is promoting Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) best practices, creating a movement, engaging the greatest brands and their millions of customers to act positively. Our activities are growing and the organization is urgently looking for an experienced profile to further capacitate its Zambian team, and drive the projects there to the highest standards.

Zambia programme

WeForest has been active around agroforestry and sustainable reforestation in Zambia since 2011, starting in Kitwe district, Copperbelt. Currently, four projects are running, two in the Copperbelt and two in Muchinga province.

The position available would focus on an expansion of WeForest impact in the larger Mpumba chiefdom:

  • The Chintumukulu project, which started in 2020, aims to establish and functionalize a community conservancy of 8,500 ha and support sustainable income sources to run the conservancy in the long-term.
  • The forest landscape around Chintumukulu and within the Mutinondo river catchment (Mpumba Chiefdom, Muchinga Province) is an important buffer zone and can become a corridor between two national parks – Lavushi Manda and South Luangwa. The area is at risk from increasing levels of deforestation and encroachment driven by agricultural expansion, charcoal production and land privatization.
  • The community landscape of the larger Mpumba chiefdom.

Role

The role of the Community Outreach Officer would be to:

  • Increase consultation, collaboration and communication between a varied set of stakeholders incl. traditional leaders, local communities and private landowners.
  • Drive stakeholders closer together by organizing joint meetings and workshops to work out a concept note for Income-generating Activities away from natural resource depletion.
  • Assist in the development of training manuals, school programmes and income-generating activities.
  • Implement field activities related to community outreach programmes including environmental awareness, training and livelihood activities.
  • Assist the Project Manager in the design, implementation and running of day to day activities and monitoring of projects in the respective field sites and community areas

Specific Tasks:

  • Conducting vocational trainings + regular visits to schools to provide training, create awareness, monitor project activities, collect data and organize visits and evaluations.
  • Writes weekly reports on their progress on programmes, and other related issues in their location and submit it to the Project Manager before the end of every week.
  • Producing monthly work plans
  • Providing accountability of and funds managed within a month (including all receipts and vouchers)
  • Maintaining good relationships with District and Customary Authorities and project schools and communities and representing WeForest at district-level meetings
  • Ensures that project activities are conducted in line with international standards of ”FPIC” and “Do no harm principles”.
  • Document success stories, case studies and collect other media and material for promotional purposes.
  • To carry out all other reasonable duties which are necessary for the efficient running and management of the organization.
  • Together with the Livelihood officer, work out a concept for Income-generating Activities away from natural resource depletion and operationalize it in the field.

Terms & Conditions

Start date: Early August

Duration of Contract: One year with the possibility of renewing upon performance

Salary: Level 2 – extensionist

Location: 100% in-country. Predominantly in Lavushi Manda district, Muchinga province

Extras: Bonus of 5% based on performance, please note that there are no field allowances though this position is also expected to carry out fieldwork regularly. Professional insurance (Essential).

Hours of Work: Full-time, working a minimum of 8 hours per day and 4 hours on Saturday. Hours will however vary depending on project needs and flexibility is essential.

Reporting line: The officer will work under the supervision of and report to the project manager on site, with regular contacts with the livelihood officer.

Candidate Profile

1) Core competencies

  • Forests and development: Theoretical knowledge of forestry, legislation and economic principles, including establishing and supporting Community Forest Areas and Management groups
  • Lands and planning: Practical knowledge of the procedure to acquire and legislation behind land ownership and land tenure.
  • Systems thinking and strategy development: Ability to gather, structure and analyze complex information and relationships to inform realistic strategies.
  • Community-oriented: Ability to plan, organize and mobilize communities
  • Knowledge Management and Adaptive Management: Ability to capture, develop, share and effectively use information and knowledge and adapt strategies in real-time.
  • Advocacy and representation: Ability to productively share knowledge and activities for various venues and stakeholders.
  • Negotiation and strategic partnership development: Ability to facilitate and negotiate partnerships; ability to understand complex landscapes and interests.

3) Qualifications and other requirements:

a. Education

  • A college degree or B.Sc., or equivalent experience, in Forestry, Rural development, Agro-ecology, Planning or related field

b. Experience

  • A minimum of 2years’ relevant work experience with at least 1-year experience in community work
  • Experience working in Miombo ecosystems
  • Experience with leading multi-stakeholder conversations and develop common concepts that are workable for a variety of stakeholders.
  • Experience with CFA and CFMG
  • Demonstrable skills and experience in management, coordination, training and reporting skills

c. Language requirements

  • Fluent in English (both speaking and writing)
  • Fluent in Bemba/Bisa (both speaking and writing)

d. Considered a plus

  • Experience with driving motorbikes is considered a plus
  • Flexible in terms of traveling and living conditions. Ability to live in remote areas with few comfort and facilities.
  • Preferably from the community or region where the beneficiaries they serve are located.
