In March 2013, First Quantum Minerals acquired Inmet Mining Corporation, a Canadian-based mining company primarily producing copper and zinc from mines in Finland, Spain and Turkey, with also a major copper deposit under development in Panama, known as Cobre Panama. The combination of the First Quantum and Inmet assets has created one of the world’s leading copper producers with a geographically diversified portfolio of high-quality operations and development projects in eight countries across five continents.

With a strategic plan to produce more than 1.3 million tonnes per annum of copper within five years, the Company is poised to become the largest, widely-held pure-play copper producer and one of the top five copper producers in the world.

Two businesses, wholly owned by First Quantum, manage our operations in Zambia. FQMO is responsible for mining activities and KMP for processing ore from our mines. Together these businesses have built Kansanshi into the largest copper mine in Africa and will be responsible for almost double production levels once Sentinel, one of our flagship project, reaches its peak.

Purpose

With a dual reporting structure to the Mining Project Manager and Kansanshi Resource Optimization Manager (ROM), this position will be responsible for day-to-day administration of support services policies and programs for the FQMO Division.  These policies cover travel and medical administration, housing management, expatriate management, immigration, organisation development, training and other workforce management and development initiatives.

  • Under direction will lead the support services activities for the Division.
  • Responsible for implementing new support services processes and continuously improving existing ones under direction from Corporate and Site RO.
  • Adapts and coordinates Group practices to ensure they are compliant with local government and/or legislation and local market conditions.
  • Manages projects and provides leadership in support services matters to appropriate management teams.
  • Works closely with other Department Managers to implement correct policies and processes as well as the introduction of new initiatives and programs.
  • Works with the ROM and other Department Managers to standardise conditions across the site.
  • Gives advice on workforce planning, retention programs, and business structure.
  • Responsible for management and maintenance of employee data for the Division.
  • Responsible for the divisional Support Services budget.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Tertiary qualification in business administration or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 to 8 years’ experience in business administration, including training & development, organisation review, expatriate management.
  • Prior experience of working in Africa.
  • Strong experience in systems and integration.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in English; must possess an appreciation and sensitivity to a culturally diverse work environment.
  • Ability to take initiative and to exercise independent judgment, decision-making and problem-solving expertise.
  • Resilience, flexibility and ability to manage multiple tasks daily and under emergency conditions.
