CARE, an International Non-Governmental relief and development organization with various projects in Central, Copperbelt, Eastern, Muchinga, Luapula, Lusaka, Northern, North-western, and Southern provinces of Zambia, has the following vacancy available in Lusaka:

Responsibilities

  • The purpose of the Gender Coordinator role is to elaborate with key stakeholders, a mechanism by which women’s empowerment and gender equality can be effectively promoted within the 1000 Most Critical Days programme as an important pathway to improved nutrition
  • A holistic review of opportunities for the promotion of women’s empowerment and gender equality across the key line Ministries, NFNC and within the District Plans and processes leading to recommendations
  • Participatory update of the gender equality implementation plan and follow up to implement the same
  • Integration of gender equality and women’s empowerment within the outcomes and monitoring of at least two of the fourteen priority interventions under the SUN Fund
  • Documentation (including lessons learned and next steps of the same)
  • Mentoring of gender focal points within key line ministries, NFNC and Districts
  • Gender and nutrition briefing papers for each sector and level
  • Integration of gender into the new National Food and Nutrition Policy
  • Reporting on the gender indicators in the overarching M&E framework for the MCDP
  • Perform any other duties as assigned
  • Desk review of key SUN Fund documents (including the gender implementation plan, the Programme Impact Pathways and the Gender and Women’s Empowerment training) policy and documents from the line
  • Ministries (gender mainstreaming policies and guidelines, HR arrangements and structures), NFNC and the Ministry of Gender
  • external documentsto identify opportunities and develop recommendations for the promotion of women’s empowerment and gender equality within the SUN Fund and MCDP
  • Validate findings with interviews
  • Develop appropriate gender equality and women’s empowerment outcomes for District plans and select through consultation two pilot Districts for roll out. Train DNCC and sector Ministries in pilot Districts and develop and implement the integrated gender component in the District plans
  • Monitor and document implementation
  • Participatory update of the gender equality implementation plan and follow up to implement the same
  • Engage Desk Officers to identify and support gender focal points in key Line Ministries and NFNC
  • Explore approaches (including with Ministry of Gender) to mentor and support them
  • Work collaboratively to develop briefing papers for each sector on gender and nutrition
  • Develop (or strengthen existing) guidelines or materials for basic analysis, training and gender mainstreaming at District levels
  • Develop, provide and report on gender training as required (or indicated by the gender equality strategy)
  • Work with NFNC and SUN FUND M&E team to collect and analyse data on the gender indicators in the M&E Framework
  • Recommend improvements on the same
  • Review all IEC and advocacy materials with a gender lens

Qualifications

  • Relevant graduate or post-graduate qualification (in Gender Studies, Equality and Diversity, Organisational
  • Development, or related discipline) or graduate qualification and substantial relevant experience
  • Knowledge, Experience and Skills
  • In depth understanding of practical gender mainstreaming in organisations
  • Working knowledge of nutrition causal frameworks and the integration or mainstreaming of gender and women’s empowerment into multi-sectoral or integrated programming
  • Five year’s experience of working in NGOs to mainstream gender in programmes and in organisations
  • Demonstrable experience working with and engaging government
  • Excellent training skills
  • Commitment to capacity building of partners and beneficiaries
  • Ability to influence and persuade in difficult situations
  • Good interpersonal skills – ability to work in a team and to motivate and develop the skills of others
