General Manager job in Zambia
Leading the Zambian small scale business in building a successful small scale farmer model which improves smallholder farmers’ profitability, grow their income and create a sustainable, profitable business which differentiates Cargill from it’s competitors in Sub-Saharan Africa. This will require the current structure to be refined and shaped for future success.
General Manager
Position purpose:
The General Manager for the Small scale business will oversee all related operations including a maize mill, cotton gin, pricing and ordering of crop inputs and risk management and assessment of the overall business.
The General Manager will be working closely with the following functional leads in Zambia:
- The commercial lead for the small scale business on pnl, go to market strategy, farmer profitability , input requirements and pricing and the restructuring of the origination team.
- Working closely with the Plant Super intendant on asset performance and production of the mill and cotton gin.
- Financial controller on risk assessment and loan recoveries.
- HR manager to oversee the staff compliment of 450 full time and permanent employees and up to 1500 employees in peak season.
- Kente team as project sponsor of the new system implementation and roll out.
- Engaging with government stakeholders and NGO’s on a regular basis will be a key aspect of this role. Working with a large number of small scale farmers has a significant level of attention from government as well as donor organizations. In addition to NGO’s and stakeholders, the small scale business attracts potential capital investment and growing interest in this sector. The General Manager together with the commercial lead will work actively to ensure all opportunities are investigated and also pro-actively develop and design possible collaboration and investment strategies with various stakeholders, investors and NGO’s.
- Leveraging key relationships if of great importance to enable Cargill’s access to and consultation with the abovementioned stakeholders.
Major tasks:
- Full responsibility and ownership of the PNL and broader structure of the business, including the development of the business plan with appropriate metrics and deliverables.
- Farmer Value proposition: Working actively with the commercial lead on further segregation of farmers and implementation of product offering. Farmer profitability tracking and risk assessment.
- Set up and track the value capture of the origination structure with commercial business and crush.
- Project Sponsor for Paperless and Kente projects; oversee and support general process improvements
- Oversee Maize Milling operation and guide possible follow on projects and offerings
- Engage with NGO’s, donor organizations and investors on collaboration opportunities and monitor execution and implementation of related projects
Qualifications
Requirements:
- Management experience within Cargill for a minimum of five years.
- Business development and strategy background will be considered advantageous.
- Experience with managing and working in a diverse team is required
- Keen interest in Africa, Agriculture and general management.
