CIGZambia is a facility that provides high-quality independent technical advice and assistance to Zambian government bodies and private sector organizations engaged in projects/programmes that help harness the potential of Zambia’s cities and towns to act as drivers for economic growth and job creation. CIGZambia is funded by the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID).

The overall programme objectives are:

  • increasing urban productivity;
  • improving inclusive access to urban economic infrastructure services;
  • increasing investment into urban economic infrastructure services; and,
  • enhancing national and regional integration between cities.

About the Role

CIGZambia is recruiting a GIS Mapping/Spatial Analyst to collect and analyse spatial and aerial data/information to support the development of Integrated Development Plans (IDPs). The role involves fieldwork to collect spatial data/information and working collaboratively with stakeholders to analyse the data for preparation of new maps and plans. This includes providing technical support to the Chipata Joint IDP Committee on all matters related to spatial data and spatial data requirements of the Committee. Reporting to the IDP Lead Consultant, the GIS Mapping/Spatial Analyst shall have a good understanding of the local development context, including environmental and physical settings.

Project Responsibilities

The day-to-day work, tasks and core job duties for this position will be to assist the IDP Project Lead Consultant in:

  • Gathering and management of geospatial data;
  • Obtaining and analysing the quality of the images specific to the geographic location;
  • Analysing fixed and moving images to determine data about what’s happening on the ground and using aerial photographs and overhead satellite images and other remote sensing products;
  • Identifying structures using overhead and aerial imagery to identify their location on ground and ascertaining their characteristics;
  • Assessing dimensional details of ground structures, such as size and height, as accurately as possible;
  • Creating and designing maps and tables based on geospatial analysis of the IDP area;
  • Training of Council and other IDP Committee and Task Team members in GIS mapping and spatial analysis;
  • Writing reports summarising the findings of geospatial analysis and presenting visual maps showing estimates for ground structures, people, and topographical features in the IDP area.

Immediate Requirement

The GIS Mapping/Spatial Analyst will support the CIGZambia urban planning projects with geospatial analytical, GIS and computer skills, including in the design of appropriate methods and tools for spatial data collection, processing and analysis, synthesis and presentation of results. The Analyst will report to the IDP Project Leader.

The initial assignment will be in support of the Chipata IDP process, with potential for follow-on work in the Solwezi IDP process, pending performance.

Key Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in GIS, Urban Planning, Land Surveying, Geography, Cartography or related field;
  • Minimum of 7 years’ work experience in geospatial data analysis, programming and/or cartography;
  • Demonstrated skills in application and use of GIS and Remote Sensing techniques;
  • Analytical skills to determine various types of ground features revealed by images;
  • Strong written skills to prepare reports on image analysis findings;
  • Experience using mapping and cartography software to create maps based on visual images;
  • Mathematical skills to use overhead images to determine the dimensions and proportions of structures on the ground;
  • Design skills to apply visualisation techniques to create maps and detailed reports about the likely size and type of natural and manufactured features in a given geographic area;
  • Experience working on Integrated Development Planning (IDP) processes, preparing IDP Reports will be an added advantage ;
  • Membership of the Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ) , or related professional associations,  will be desirable.
