Job Title: National Director

Position Summary:

The National Director, reporting to the HFH Zambia Board and in consultation with the EMEA Program Development Manager, is responsible for developing the capacity of the National Organization (NO) and its board of directors to fulfill the purposes of Habitat for Humanity in this country, as agreed in Memoranda of Understanding and in alignment with the Habitat for Humanity Covenant.
The National Director will provide servant leadership to the national organization, its volunteers and staff, and its programs and partnerships.

Duties / Areas of Responsibility:

Servant Leadership: Model servant leadership and motivate the other leaders of the national organization to effectively manage its vision and resources, and to skillfully shepherd its stakeholders and homeowner partners. Demonstrate and articulate the love and teachings of Jesus Christ and ensure that Habitat for Humanity core values permeate the organization at all levels, but especially at the local level with communities and families in need.

Vision and Planning: Develop and guide the vision and long-term goals of the national organization in collaboration with the board and stakeholders, and facilitate the development of strategic and annual plans to achieve both the national and International visions and purposes, reflecting Habitat for Humanity principles and core values. Integrate national vision into EMEA area vision and purposes, allocating on average 20%- time for regional or area initiatives.

Governance and Board Development: Ensure organizational stability and sustainability by building a wise, skilled, committed, and balanced board of directors, marked by integrity and upholding the Habitat mission. Assist in recruiting qualified members, participate in meetings as an ex officio member, collaborate in policy development, ensure resolutions are implemented, and serve as liaison between the board and the national organization’s staff, affiliates, and partners.

Human Resource Management: Recruit, develop, manage, and evaluate personnel to promote the purposes and achieve the goals of the organization, including staff, advisors, and volunteers. Develop and deploy effective training programmes and equitable human resource systems to invest in and retain people of quality, who are devoted to the mission, as the primary resource of the organization.

Programme Management: Capitalize on opportunities and overcome obstacles to achieve programme scale, stability, and sustainability growth goals in alignment with Habitat principles and core values. Oversee program planning, management, and evaluation through implementation of initiative and project plans,; innovative partnerships; and construction and appropriate technology quality control systems. Evaluate, document, and report programme results. Ensure effective staff and volunteer recruitment, support and engagement in the programme.

Stewardship and Accountability: In consultation with the board, ensure the fiscal, legal and programmatic integrity, efficiency, and effectiveness of the organization, including oversight of fiscal planning and budgeting, internal controls and external audits, mortgage tracking and statistical documentation, and accurate and timely fiscal and narrative reporting relevant country authorities, EMEA Area Office and Donors. Ensure programme stability and the security of capital by securing governmental registration and approval and/or negotiating binding partnership agreements. Enstill a a culture of accountability within the organisation.

Resource Development and Communications and Advocacy: Ensure the development of resources adequate to achieve short- and long-term strategic plans, in collaboration with the board of directors and Habitat EMEA. Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of annual resource development campaigns including deployment of systems, communications materials, and expansion initiatives. Diversify constituencies creatively, including local funding, US affiliates, bilateral and multi-lateral aid organizations, students and youth, international visitors, and faith groups. Represent the organization and maintain effective relations with all stakeholders, including government officials, donors and sponsors, partners and homeowners, and the public at large. Develop public educational initiatives aimed at advocating for governmental and private sector attention be focused on understanding housing issues and remediating inadequate and sub-standard housing and housing related policies

Experience Required:

Five or more years of successful international development experience including three or more years effective management experience, preferably with Shelter Sector or in the non-profit sector in Zambia.
Community development experience a distinct advantage
Experience in serving on or the development of non-profit/NGO boards of directors, strongly preferred.
Experience in non-profit/NGO resource development, plus a local and/or international network of prospective donors and constituencies, strongly preferred.
Experience in managing donor-funded projects, preferred

Education Required:

University degree in a relevant field, such as international development or relations, public administration, management, civil engineering, and/or social sciences.
Continuing education or graduate study, preferred but not required, in relevant fields such as community development, non-profit/NGO management, board development, resource development, communications,Advocacy and in country- or region-specific issues.
