Title: Emergency Partnerships and Deployments Intern

Supervisor: Emergency Partnerships and Deployments Officer
1. General Background
In 2015, the High Commissioner’s “Policy on Emergency Response Activation, Leadership and Accountabilities – UNHCR/HCP/2015/1” was published, outlining accountabilities, responsibilities and authorities related to emergency preparedness and response across UNHCR.
The Emergency Partnerships and Deployments team was created to oversee deployments of personnel to the field as well as to manage the partnerships with 18 standby partners who deploy secondees and service packages to UNHCR for assistance in key technical areas.
This internship offers a unique opportunity to work in the emergency team of UNHCR, in close contact with UNHCR Emergency Stand by teams who are constantly deployed to emergency operations.
Therefore we seek a dynamic and driven individual with a strong interest in refugee issues, conflict and strong skills in political and conflict analysis.
2. Purpose and Scope of Assignment
The intern will provide support to the Emergency Partnerships and Deployments Intern:
  •  Production of updates on emergency deployments and capacity building initiatives in line with corporate branding strategy and requirements;
  •  Update and support to management of the information packages available to deployees and field offices (Standby Partner Guide);
  •  Support the further development of the emergency handbook platform;
  •  Contribute to the partnerships strategy;
  •  Participate in meetings related to emergency preparedness and response;
  •  Support emergency HR cells if required;
  •  Support the team in performing other tasks as required
4. Qualifications and Experience
a. Education (Level and area of required and/or preferred education)
  • Any of the following university degrees (preferably at master’s level): International Relations, International Politics, Development Studies, Emergency practice, Strategic studies, or related.
b. Work Experience
  • Any relevant experience an advantage
  • Experience in research and drafting short, concise and specific reports – required
  • Experience in word processing and graphic design an asset.
c. Key Competencies
  • English language proficient is required;
  • Demonstrated writing skills in English. Writing must be of a very high standard, with an example attached to expression of interest;
  • Expert knowledge of the use of excel, word and able and willing to quickly learn to use new software are required;
  • Knowledge of computer design programmes are an asset (Adobe Indesign and Adobe Illustrator).
Conditions:
The intern is expected to begin as early as possible (as of the beginning of April 2017) and be available for at least three months, although preference for a longer internship.
The role is full time (40 hours per week) with working hours between 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday (30 minutes lunch break included).
Please note that the terms of internship as defined by UNHCR practice, preclude payment of any kind.
