The National Legal Aid Clinic for Women (NLACW) is a project of the Women’s Rights Committee of the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) which was established in 1990 by the Women’s Rights Committee of LAZ, to provide affordable legal representation to women and children from marginalized social sectors. The overall objective of the NLACW is to empower women by facilitating their access to legal rights by way of legal representation, counselling, legal and human rights education as a distinct but integral part of the women’s movement.
The NLACW seeks to recruit a qualified and experienced professional in the following vacancy;
SENIOR LEGAL OFFICER -LUSAKA
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The individual occupying the position will ensure that legal cases are managed efficiently and effectively to meet the client expectations and the Clinic’s objectives.
Key tasks will include:
- Giving legal opinions to clients and representing clients before the Courts of law
- Drafting and or reviewing and finalizing relevant court documents
- Supervising, mentoring and coaching staff within the legal department to ensure that work is done cohesively to achieve the Clinic’s intended goals and objectives.
- Ensuring that all claims and other court documents are filed with the courts of law.
- Undertaking mediation negotiations on behalf of clients.
- Updating clients regularly on the status of their legal matters.
- Manage and implement client relationship strategy.
- Preparing regular status reports to appraise management on the status of legal cases.
- Carrying out research on legal challenges.
- Act as Co-coordinator in specific projects undertaken by the Clinic such as workshops, Conferences and Meetings as and when required.
- Generally deal with day to day management of the litigation department.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- A degree in Law from a recognized university.
- The holder of a valid practising certificate and an Advocate of the High Court of Zambia.
- Member of the Law Association of Zambia
- Four (4) years post qualification experience as an Advocate
- Experience in working on human rights and gender will be an added advantage.
