Legal Officer Job Vacancy: Examinations Council of Zambia – September 2017


Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates to fill the following vacant position in the Administration Department.

LEGAL OFFICER (1) ECZ1 HQ

Reporting to the Council Secretary, the Legal Officer will enhance the Council Secretary’s effectiveness by recording minutes, provide legal advice, developing case information, evidence, contract arrangements, and settlement options; tracking cases and supporting trial proceedings.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Service ECZ Committee Meetings by producing agendas, taking minutes and conveying decisions
  • Handle correspondence before and after meetings
  • Provide legal opinion on the merits of a case
  • Propose ex curia settlement
  • Determine dispute resolution mechanism
  • Prepare Court documents
  • Procure witnesses and other evidence for trial
  • Prosecute/defend matter before appropriate Court/Tribunal
  • Review on-going cases and advise the Council Secretary appropriately
  • Keep abreast with the Laws and Regulations of the Republic of Zambia
  • Ensure that the ECZ is compliant with the Laws of the Republic of Zambia, international laws and
    standards
  • Monitor ECZ’s performance of its obligations under various contracts and agreements
  • Review monthly and quarterly litigation reports from external legal service providers
  • Conduct quarterly inspection of litigation files in the custody of external legal service providers

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • School Certificate or its equivalent
  • Degree in Law (LLB)
  • Advocate of the High Court of Zambia
  • Minimum of 5 years experience
  • Minimum of 3 years relevant work experience
  • Must be a member of the Law Association of Zambia
  • Must have specialized training in minute taking or company secretary work
