Position: Shovels and Drills Superintendent

Lumwana Mine, Solwezi, Zambia.

Reporting to: Maintenance Manager

Lumwana Mining Company Limited (LMC), a copper mining company owned by Barrick Gold Corporation is situated in the North Western region of Zambia, some 300 km west of the Zambian Copperbelt and 95 km south west of the provincial capital of Solwezi. The mine is a multi-pit, multi-staged operation mining approximately 100MT of ore and waste per annum and producing copper concentrates containing an average of 120,000 tonnes of copper metal per year over a twenty (20) year mine life, making Lumwana the largest single open cut copper mine in Africa. The Company is now looking for an experienced and qualified individual to be considered for the position of Shovels and Drills Superintendent.

Role Summary

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, you will be responsible for the maintenance of the shovel and drill fleets and ensuring Barrick standards. Furthermore, this role ensures all equipment performance targets and work management KPI’s are achieved whilst also meeting the maintenance budget, with safety above all else. The development and progression of Zambian employees is a critical KPI.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the maintenance of all shovel and drill equipment and infrastructure.
  • Carry out structured routine safety inspections in cooperation with field maintenance coordinators.
  • Accountable to spend significant time in the field interacting with the team.
  • Actively promote full cooperation between the maintenance and mining operation.
  • Take full responsibility and accountability for the performance of the field maintenance team.
  • Accountable for the review of cost performance monthly, including both forecast and variance analysis.
  • Review competencies, scope of work, schedules of rates for all contractors ensuring costs are managed and controlled. The approval of all contractors to be approved by the Maintenance Manager only.
  • With the planning team review field equipment downtime and ensure cooperation to close out actions arising from analysis.
  • Accountable for work management performance in the effective and efficient application of maintenance resources as measured by schedule compliance, PM compliance, level of planned vs unplanned work and the management of backlog.
  • Ensure section performance is regularly reported to the team through undertaking formal end of month tool box meeting.
  • Develop continuous improvement strategies and communicate and apply accordingly.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement of maintenance processes and systems.
  • Measure and report overall equipment and infrastructure performance.
  • Monitor condition of equipment.
  • Carry out routine and statutory inspections.
  • Develop, implement and maintain safe work procedures and promote high safety and health awareness.   Promote and comply with the LMC Occupational Health & Safety Policy.
  • Be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the team.
  • Ensure appropriate facilities, procedures and workforce competence to achieve legal compliance, incident prevention and the achievement of tasks in an environmentally sustainable manner.
  • Experience in the budgeting process and cost controls for the maintenance department
  • Good computer skills with the ability to use integrated management systems, word processing, presentation and spreadsheet applications.
  • Coaching and mentoring of subordinates through Barrick Competency Based Employee Development (BCBED)
  • Assessing employees in structured skills assessment process such as Employee Training Assessment Management System (ETAMS)
  • Offer support to supervisor positions so to be able to assess work place efficiencies and provide guidance to workplace supervisors
  • Generate report on machine availability through the use of a recognized CMMS preferably Pronto
  • Ensure effective communication with delegate prior to departure from site.
  • Be visible in the workplace.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Diploma/Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Certified applicable Trade qualification.
  • 10+ years’ experience in similar type management roles.
  • Significant experience (15 years) in Heavy Earthmoving Equipment maintenance.
  • Experience in large multi pit operations utilising large-scale mining equipment.
  • Experience in managing costs and budgeting
  • Experience on Hitachi Electrical and Diesel Shovels (5500)
  • Demonstrated application of continuous improvement ideas
  • Good computer skills with the ability to use integrated management systems, word processing, presentation and spreadsheet applications.
  • Must have a current driver’s licence.
  • Member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia
