Principal Technical Advisor – Mining Production

Lumwana Mine, Kalumbila, Zambia.

Reporting to: Mining Manager

Lumwana Mining Company Limited (LMC), a copper mining company owned by Barrick Gold Corporation is situated in the North Western region of Zambia, some 300 km west of the Zambian Copperbelt and 95 km south west of the provincial capital of Solwezi. The mine is a multi-pit, multi-staged operation mining approximately 100MT of ore and waste per annum and producing copper concentrates containing an average of 120,000 tonnes of copper metal per year over a twenty (20) year mine life, making Lumwana the largest single open cut copper mine in Africa. The Company is now looking for an experienced and qualified individual to be considered for the position of Principal Technical Advisor – Mining Production

Role Summary

Reporting to the Mining Manager, you will be responsible for leading a team of Technical Advisors and assist the Production Superintendents in compiling a workable mine plan, assist and guide the Short Term Planning Superintendent to derive the operational plan. You will also be responsible for giving support to the Load & Haul and Drill & Blast Superintendents to execute said plans and ensure compliance. Your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist the Mining Manager in a support role with regards to the management of mine plan and scheduling of equipment
  • Understand production and cost targets in conjunction with the daily, weekly and monthly mining plans that correspond with the yearly production target.
  • Provide input and guidance on the mining operational plan.
  • Responsible for the guidance and training of mining staff in production and quality of the mining operation including excavation, dumping and construction processes
  • Key role in driving continuous improvement within the mining department.
  • Develop continuous improvement strategies and communicate and apply accordingly.
  • Work with the Superintendents and Technical Advisors to achieve production and cost targets in conjunction with the daily, weekly and monthly mining plans that correspond with the annual production target
  • Identify specific areas for cost improvement and ensure the development and implementation of action plan to achieve these gains.
  • Be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the team.
  • Ensure appropriate facilities, procedures and workforce competence to achieve legal compliance, incident prevention and the achievement of tasks in an environmentally sustainable manner

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Degree in Mining Engineering or any other Tertiary qualification coupled with at least 15 years mining experience may be considered
  • Significant 10 years’ experience in the open pit Mining industry of which 5 years should be at operational management level
  • Experience in large multi pit operations utilizing large-scale mining equipment ie electric/diesel (AC) driven 240t dump trucks, 500t excavators and face shovels is essential
  • Competent in incident/accident investigation
  • Experience in managing costs and budgeting
  • Good computer skills with the ability to use integrated management systems, word processing, presentation and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels
  • Member of the relevant Professional body
