The PEPFAR-funded Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Global Health Consortium (GHC) project is designed to transform clinical HIV practice to provide high quality, comprehensive, interprofessional care, and treatment to people living with HIV with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of healthcare, clinic workflow, and team building leading to improved health outcomes.

Meharry Medical College Global Health and HIV Clinical Services is a consortium of the HBCU project and is currently implementing projects aimed at improving the quality of care for mothers and babies in selected Ministry of Health (MOH) healthcare facilities in the country. Meharry is working on expanding its work to additional MOH facilities. As a result of this expansion, the project is recruiting for the following full-time positions to be based at the scale-up sites in Lusaka.

1. Medical Doctors – Two (2) Positions

The Medical Doctor will be an experienced practicing physician who will improve the overall clinical practice that includes alleviation of clinic congestion and improve quality of pediatric ART care in high volume HIV treatment sites. Reporting to the Senior Supervising Clinical Paediatrician; this position will be responsible for, but not limited to the following duties:

  • Provide clinical services on a daily basis to MCH to meet the 95:95:95 targets at the designated facility.
  • Through the implementation of ART treatment guidelines, improve the quality of distribution of antiretroviral drugs for mothers and babies at the facility.
  • Monitor viral load of moms, babies, and adolescents by requesting viral load tests for pregnant mothers and babies.
  • Develop and implement a pathway to improve dried blood spot (DBS) collection and turn-around of DNA/NAT results to verify early infant diagnosis (EID) of HIV infection.
  • Establish site-level patient flow in the MCH unit to improve wait times and strengthen the quality of care mothers and babies receive at the facility.
  • Coordinate and provide logistic support for the program related events such as training, workshops, assessment visits, and annual work planning to support clinical transformation and training of staff.
  • Write and submit required reports for the facility and ensure that reports are submitted to the Senior Supervising Senior Pediatrician and the clinical staff (Project Manager) at Meharry Medical College Global Health and HIV Clinical Services headquarters, and copies to the In-Country Director.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by Meharry Management.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Licensed Practicing License for medical Doctors.
  • Registered with the Health Professions Council of Zambia.
  • Knowledge of Care Coordination, Quality Assurance, and HIV Testing Requirements.
  • Knowledge of current HIV treatment guidelines including adherence support and adverse drug reactions monitoring for pediatric patients (ages 0 – 14 years old).
  • Experience practicing pediatrics medicine within the healthcare environment
  • Commitment and dedication to retaining patient confidentiality.
  • Must have training in antiretroviral drug formulations and qualifications to prescribe pediatric ART.
  • Experience in healthcare and community-based health programming for HIV
  • The practice of current HIV treatment guidelines for pediatric patients.
  • Understanding of health facility, screening tools, registers, client files, and other necessary health documents.
