Job vacancy: National Coordinator, Zambia Fight Inequality Alliance – interim, full time position

Job Title: National Coordinator, Zambia Fight Inequality Alliance
Start date: Early March, 2021

Contract Type: Full time, interim position. Fixed term contract for 16 weeks through Alliance for Community Action, our fiscal host organisation.

Salary: A competitive salary will be offered commensurate with skills and experience

Location: Lusaka. Note that the post holder must have pre-existing legal right to work in Zambia; the post holder must be willing to work from the office of one alliance member, as well as from home.

The Fight Inequality Alliance –FIA Zambia is a growing group of leading international and national non-profit organisations, human rights campaigners, women’s rights groups, environmental groups, faith-based organisations, trade unions, social movements and other Civil Society Organisations –CSOs who have come together to fight the growing scourge of inequality in Zambia.

Role Overview:

Leads the national organizing work for the Fight Inequality Alliance in Zambia – including coordinating the Global Week of Action each January, coordinating the “people’s budget” mobilisations and organizing other key national events/actions, producing campaign materials, and organising the gatherings and training of the alliance. Builds the membership, profile, connections and credibility of the alliance with civil society organisations in Zambia. Serves as a key representative and planner for the national alliance where required. Leads with drive and inspiration and with humility and collaboration.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership to Fight Inequality Alliance Zambia’s work alongside the National Steering Group, and translate that vision into specific strategies and concrete actions to achieve targets and towards alliance strengthening and growth.
  • Design and coordinate the key activities and mobilisations of the alliance alongside members.
  • Act as a key change agent, responsible for translating a strategic change agenda into plans and operational delivery. Oversee project teams composed of networks of people across the alliance.
  • Mobilises new members and capacity in support of the alliance and make best possible use of member expertise and potential.
  • Builds the profile, connections and credibility of the alliance with civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
  • Hosts and guides the meetings and ongoing functioning of the Zambia alliance
  • Capture lessons and best practices for wider sharing and to inform planning. Coordinate monitoring and reporting; including organising reflection and learning activities.
  • Ensure financial performance of the national alliance including the delivery of agreed targets. Draw up budget, monitor, forecast and report on the budget, including justifying variances.
  • Support Zambia’s participation in the regional and global alliance.
  • From time to time carry out any other duties that are within the scope of the job, and as reasonably required by the Line Manager.

Person specification:

  • Strong experience in organizing from local to national level in Zambia
  • At least 5 year’s experience working in Zambian civil society – ideally working in alliance with social movements, NGOs and unions.
  • Able to thrive in an emergent space, in a “start-up” organisation without all the systems, processes and support of a big NGO. Able to thrive in a new role from the beginning.
  • Partnership and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
  • Ability to make strategic decisions and the ambition to want to grow an exciting alliance to become a major player in Zambia
  • Proven negotiation and influencing skills, with the credibility and management experience to broker agreement. Respected by key constituencies of the alliance.
  • Dynamic and empowering leader able to exert influence and drive change without line management authority or hard power, and to lead in a way that builds other’s leadership.
  • Excellent analytical skills underpinned by a good understanding of inequality issues and debates in Zambia, as well as the political institutions and processes.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Strong feminist understanding, analysis, commitment and behaviour. Committed to battling all forms of discrimination and to standing with the most oppressed.
  • Strong commitment to develop, promote and practice Fight Inequality Alliance’s goals and values.
  • Willing to travel as required without creature comforts.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Completely fluent and strong in English. Preferably also fluent in at least one other national language.
