Netherlands Development Organization Latest Job Recruitment In Zambia

URBAN SANITATION & HYGIENE ENGINEER

SNV is a not-for-profit international development organisation. Founded in the Netherlands 50 years ago, we have built a long-term, local presence in 39 of the poorest countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. SNV is dedicated to a society where all people enjoy the freedom to pursue their own sustainable development. Our global team of local and international advisors works with local partners to equip communities, businesses and organisations with the tools, knowledge and connections they need to increase their incomes and gain access to basic services – empowering them to break the cycle of poverty and guide their own development.

In Zambia, SNV works together with local partners to provide technical expertise in three sectors: Agriculture; Renewable Energy and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). For the WASH sector, SNV is focused on increasing access to safely managed sanitation and in sustaining positive changes in hygiene behaviour, by providing scalable, market-driven solutions tailored to rural and urban contexts. Access to safe water and sanitation is a human right, and governments are the duty bearers of progressive realization of this right in their jurisdiction. With the SDG 6, governments have expressed their ambition and commitment to achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water as well as adequate and equitable sanitation services by 2030. SNV contributes to the capacity, performance and accountability of local and national governments to realize this ambition in their areas, increasing the number of people having access and using safe water and sanitation services, and also strengthening service delivery systems capable to respond to the demands of the future. We bring together different stakeholders, from the public sector, the private sector and civil society, to develop tailored answers for their situation.

SNV’s Urban Sanitation and Hygiene for Health and Development (USHHD) project

Part of SNV’s programmes focuses on urban sanitation, responding to the accelerated unplanned growth
of cities and towns, and the limited attention to human waste management. The programme called Urban Sanitation and Hygiene for Health and Development has been developed for medium towns and cities, with predominantly on-site facilities. Urban sanitation and hygiene for health and development is a multi-country programme that works with municipal governments to develop inclusive, safe and sustainable city-wide sanitation services. The programme comprises of five components viz: (i) WASH governance, (ii) Investment and finance, (iii) Behavioural change communication, (iv) Safe and affordable services and (v) Treatment, disposal and reuse. We engage the private sector, civil society organizations, users and local authorities to improve public health and development opportunities in their city.

Brief Zambia context

According to JMP 2015, the urban sanitation coverage in Zambia stood at 56%. However even where there is access, the quality of service is often inadequate. The incidence of OD reported at 1%, even though coverage is 56% meaning the remainder using unimproved or shared facilities. Anecdotal evidence suggests, however, that the incidence of open defecation is much higher than 1% in the many informal settlements that have become developed around urban centres (there are, for instance, places where ‘flying toilets’ are used. Access to sewerage in urban areas generally is low, ranging from just over 40% in the service area of Mulonga and Nkana Water and Sewerage Company (WSC) in the Copperbelt to 15% in Lusaka and Southern regions and less than 5% in the Western, Northern and North-Western regions (National Urban Sanitation Strategy, 2014). As a result, the great majority of urban residents use on-site sanitation systems and the management of faecal sludge is a growing challenge.
These circumstances suggest that the urban sanitation challenges lies primarily in improving the quality of existing sanitation infrastructure and services – particularly faecal sludge management – rather than promoting the first-time use of toilets.
