New Job Opportunity at Lubambe Copper Mines: Senior Planning Engineer


Lubambe Copper Mine is located within the Greater Konkola Area of the Zambian Copperbelt and consists of a large-scale mining license covering an area of approximately 240 square kilometres. The mine is a modern, world class facility with fully mechanized underground operations.

Lubambe Copper Mines is owned by EMR Capital of Australia (80%) and ZCCM — Investments Holdings (20%).  The Mine is currently in a ramp up stage and will ultimately produce 45, 000 tonnes of contained copper and will employ approximately 1,500 people. The Plant infrastructure consists of a Concentrator plant, a laboratory and underground infrastructure. The Concentrator incorporates crushing, milling, flotation, and filtration. The design capacity is 2.5 MTPA of ore at an average mill grade of 2.3% copper, yielding 45,000 tonnes of contained copper in concentrate to be sold to a smelter in Zambia.

To support this vision, Lubambe Copper Mine seeks to employ experienced and qualified individuals in the following position:

SENIOR PLANNING ENGINEER – 1 POSITION

This position reports to the Manager — Mine Planning.

Purpose of the Position:

To monitor and manage all mine planning requirements of strategic mining districts and develop short to medium term mine plans and designs within a set of parameters from approved operational constraints and business objectives by sequencing waste removal and ore extraction to ensure continuity of production output, and sustainability throughout the life of mine. To supervise and manage all Planning Engineers.

Key Performance Areas / Indicators (KPA/Is):

  • Safety – Eliminate FACs, MTCs, LTls & Fatalities by promoting highest safety standards within and beyond the scope of mine planning requirements within the Lubambe SHEQ guidelines and mine safety statutory obligations
  • Mine Design – Develop detailed mine design/stoping layouts which ensure the best utilization of the mineral resource based on survey and geological data. Optimize mine design/stoping layouts to incorporate updated methodology, reduce development requirements and increase mining productivity. Monitoring and controlling efficiencies and powder factors on primary and secondary development as well as stope production.
  • Mine Scheduling – Develop internal plans and schedules to ensure planning dept assists the mine to achieve short, medium & long-term strategic goals. Set up and manage planning systems so that production data is collected efficiently and utilized in the adjustment of the mine design to  improve general mining efficiencies
  • Team Work – Work within the greater Technical Services Department including Geology and Survey sections and other departments as required in achieving their objectives. Coordinate daily, weekly and monthly production planning meetings. Carry out mine planning functions as directed by the Mine Planning Manager.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A degree or diploma qualification in Mining Engineering.
  • Member of Engineering Institute of Zambia (El Z) is a must
  • At least 5 years in mine planning
  • Experience at an operational and supervisory levels
  • Strong planning and analytical skills coupled with solid exposure in Microstation.
  • Additional exposure to Mine2-4D and Enhanced Production
  • Scheduler or related scheduling package will be an added advantage

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum qualification Grade 12/ Form five certificate
  • Valid FirstAld Certificate
  • Operating Drivers permit licence
  • Minimum Three (3) years relevant practical experience in a Metallurgical Plant
