Purpose:

The primary responsibility of this role is to further MSI’s Goal: The prevention of unwanted births and its mission of ensuring the individual’s right to children by choice not chance

It is a role requirement that the job holder must fully support the concept of Child Protection, zero tolerance for fraud and bribery and comply with and promote and live MSI CORE VALUES: mission driven, customer focused, results orientated, pioneering, sustainable and people-centered.

Key Responsibilities

External networking & representation of MSZ

Support the formation of effective partnerships within the development arena to increase the status and level of recognition for MSZ’s work and mission and to influence the policy, practice and grant-making decisions of donors and the NGO sector for a more enabling environment for the delivery of sexual and reproductive health services.

  • Ensure visibility and raise the profile of MSZ among key stakeholders, including  selected European donors, by organizing and attending meetings and maintaining professional relationships with strategically placed individuals within target institutions
  • Create and support opportunities to highlight MSZ policy messages and technical expertise to a wider audience through media channels and special events, linking with communications and clinical teams as required
  • Update and support advocacy strategies and initiatives in order to influence policy and budgetary outcomes among the main donor institutions, national working groups and government strategy documents.

Policy change & advocacy

  • Monitor and report relevant international health and development policy developments
  • Support relationships with key policy makers and cooperating partners in order to influence policy change and place MSZ in a strong position to bid for proposals
  • Plan and coordinate quarterly Safe Abortion Action Group meetings, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss barriers to and progress around reducing maternal mortality due to unsafe abortion
  • Work closely with the Programmes Director for strategic direction regarding all MSZ policy and advocacy work

Support to the Programmes department

  • Monitor project performance to ensure projects are on track against targets. This includes monitoring project deliverables, budgets, burn rates, and appropriate coding and cost recovery against each grant and raising any areas of concern to the Programmes Director.
  • Participate in donor meetings as required
  • Support the Programmes Director to draft and finalize donor narrative and financial reports
  • Responsible for reports (quarterly, midterm or annual, depending on the grant)
  • Support proposal development as requested
  • Maintain up-to-date files – electronic in grants database and hard copy – of all grant documents including work plans, budgets, reports and approval documents
  • Independently manage policy-oriented grants

Skills and Experience

Qualifications

  • Relevant post-graduate degree preferred
  • IT literacy: excellent knowledge of Word, Excel, e-mail systems and the internet
  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Sound knowledge of international development and reproductive health organisations and policies
  • Advanced knowledge of development issues

Experience

  • Five years relevant work experience
  • Proven track record in advancing sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR)
  • Understanding of SRHR issues in Zambia
  • Experience writing reports for external audiences (e.g. donors)
  • Experience developing budgets and analyzing financial information in Excel (Pivot table experience preferable)
