Self Help Africa (SHA) is an International non-profit organization implementing food security and livelihood programs in rural Zambia.  SHA’s mission is to develop enterprising solutions that enable smallholder farmers to achieve a better quality of life. SHA seeks to recruit a Communications Assistant who will be responsible for communicating about the Strengthening Capacity of Local Actors on Nutrition Sensitive Agri-Food Value Chain in Zambia and Malawi. Specifically, the Communications Assistant will be responsible for increasing the visibility and the media profile of this IFAD-funded project.

Duties

The Communications Assistant will be required to:

  • Keep up-to-date with project activities, project reports, and lessons learned by obtaining data, reports, stories, pictures, video footage, write-ups, etc. from our partners and SHA field staff.
  • Create a continuous stream of various types of news items for publication & distribution via printed media such as newspapers, posters, and pamphlets, as well as through traditional electronic media such as radio and television, as well as through internet-based channels such as Facebook, YouTube, etc.
  • Maximize public exposure of the project and draw national and international attention to it on a weekly basis.
  • Develop products with educational value for public distribution (posters and pamphlets on production and nutrition etc., as well as a video such as found on accessagriculture.org, as well as journal articles).
  • Closely liaise with the SHA communications team in headquarters to optimise dissemination of information

Required relevant Qualifications and Experience:

  • A degree or diploma in Development Studies, Journalism, or at least two years’ relevant experience
  • Fluency in speaking and writing in English
  • Reasonable knowledge of Word, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Sound Editor or similar mid-level software to create products of reasonable quality ready for printing and direct distribution to poster walls, newspapers, journals, websites, various media outlets such as radio and television stations, etc.
  • Good writing skills
  • Social media skills for Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc.
  • Capacity to interact and work with media people
  • Ability to “sell” the project to various news organizations and others
  • Willingness to travel 50% of the time
