Working in Zambia since 1996, Plan International Zambia’s development and capacity building programmes focus primarily on Education, Health, Water and Sanitation, Economic Security and Youth Empowerment, including Child Protection and Participation. Plan International Zambia has programme units in; Central, Luapula, and Eastern Provinces including in Lusaka, where the Country Office is located.

We are looking for experienced, innovative, motivated, self-starter individuals to fill the position of Project Officer – WASH & GENDER.  Plan International together with WASH Alliance International and SNV, with the support from the Kingdom of Netherlands are establishing WASH-SDGs Consortium to realize and accelerate the achievement of universal service in water and sanitation access by 2030 based on the SDG targets. The WASH-SDGs Consortium work in 7 Asian and African countries, namely Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Nepal, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

Project Officer – WASH & GENDER (Lusaka Country Office 1 Position)

Position Description

The Project Officer WASH & Gender will work together with the project team to Plan, implement and coordinate project activities in Chongwe and Kafue districts. He/she will support preparation & management of annual plans and budget for the project in a gender transformative way.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Facilitating the training of Government staff/volunteers to implement gender transformative sanitation and hygiene activities in Chongwe and Kafue districts.
  • Identification of capacity building needs of community members including children and youth on the project to ensure competence in selection, planning and management of project components
  • Designing and implementing capacity building activities that ensure that beneficiaries understand the importance of in Integrating Gender and good sanitation and hygiene practices through the project life to challenge the belief and attitudes of parents in girls’ upbringing.
  • Ensure that planning and implementation of the project is done in a gender transformative way.
  • Participate in the planning, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of project
  • Support in the development of gender-sensitive sanitation and hygiene indicators for the project and ensure the reporting is based on identified gender outcomes
  • Identify and apply effective measures to ensure the project realize its set objectives.
  • Ensuring that accountability standards of effectiveness and efficiency of the project are established and monitored through project site visits
  • Supporting implementation and scaling up of project including the use of innovations and adapting/scaling-up of best practices.
  • Ensuring that research (study, evaluation, etc) findings and lessons learnt are used to improve project planning and implementation.
  • Coordinates and facilitates the project planning and review with participation of key stakeholders and partners.
  • Establishing in-house networks to enhance integration of project in the Province (Lusaka).
  • Establishing partnerships with NGO’S and government entities and various stakeholders to ensure long term sustainability of the project activities

Individual Specifications:

  • Minimum qualification; Degree in Environmental Health Sciences, Social Sciences and related fields.
  • Three years practical experience in a similar role in a development organization with experience in Sanitation, Hygiene Behavior change, Gender, Development and implementation of Gender programs.
  • Experience in gender mainstreaming, gender sensitive and transformative programming an added advantage
  • Must possess proven ability to create good working relationships with partners, donors, NGO’S and relevant line Ministries
  • Good community participatory skills
  • Excellent public speaking and writing skills
  • Excellent project, planning, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Knowledge of local languages
  • Possess a clean driver’s license.
  • Leadership skills
  • Capacity to deal with people of diverse cultures
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
