GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Dean of the Faculty of Science and Human Development (FSHD) oversees and manages academic programs, including delivery of instruction, hiring, management, assignment, and supervision of faculty. The dean provides vision and direction for the Faculty of Science and Human Development academic processes in accordance with the vision and mission of Northrise University. They are responsible for guiding and directing the Faculty, and they represent its students and faculty as a whole.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The main responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  1. The Dean shall be responsible to the Vice Chancellor for the administration of the Faculty and shall exercise the responsibilities of Faculty Dean in accordance with the policies and procedures of the University.
  2. The Dean shall chair the Faculty in accordance with the powers and duties laid out in the University Act. The Dean is expected to maintain the confidence of the Faculty.
  3. The Dean shall chair a committee of Department Chairs in the Faculty. It is the Dean’s responsibility to consult with the Chairs on the development of policies and general directions for the University, and to provide the University
  4. Administration with the views of the departments on issues and plans.
  5. The Dean shall develop a budget for the administration of the Faculty, which conforms to University practices and shall be responsible for ensuring that the budget is expended in keeping with the general objectives towards which the budget was developed.
  6. The Dean shall maintain links between the Faculty and other Faculties and with the Deans of Graduate Studies and Continuing Studies. The Dean shall also establish and maintain links with other institutions and academic bodies, both provincial and national.
  7. The Dean shall support curriculum development and the initiation and development of new undergraduate and graduate programs in line with the University’s overall programming objectives.
  8. High standards of teaching, methods of evaluating teaching effectiveness and grading practices shall be encouraged by the Dean.
  9. The Dean shall foster and encourage research within the Faculty.
  10. The Dean’s position is a highly responsible one, requiring full-time attention.
  11. Nevertheless, Deans should maintain contact with their discipline during the term of office.
  12. The Dean shall serve on the Senate and other University Committees as required and shall report to the official bodies of the University and to University administrative officers on academic and administrative developments relating to the Faculty. The Dean shall carry out such other duties as may be assigned by University bodies, the Vice Chancellor and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
  13. Perform any other duties as assigned by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

An earned terminal degree (PhD preferred) and prior successful experience in both teaching at university level and academic program management. Or an earned master’s degree with a minimum of four years in academic affairs at a department chair level or higher.

KEY COMPETENCIES

  1. Minimum 5 years of professional experience.
  2. Ability to understand the needs and circumstances of both young and adult students and to work as a member of a team.
  3. Demonstrated excellence in teaching preferably at a college level or higher.
  4. Proven supervisory experience within an academic environment with leadership in the development of academic programs.
  5. Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  6. Understanding of the needs of a student population with diverse cultural, academic and socio-economic backgrounds.
  7. In-depth understanding of, or background in technical education.
  8. Embody an administrative style that is collegial and energetic.
  9. Model a willingness and ability to work cooperatively with diverse constituencies both within and outside NU.
  10. Understand higher education funding streams, including familiarity with grants.
  11. Be experienced in developing and implementing new programs, and be familiar
  12. with accrediting boards and agencies.
  13. Understand informational and educational technology systems as they apply to instructional, administrative, and student needs.
