Position Overview

The main role of the Senior Research Associate will be to provide statistical and epidemiological data management support to the National Health Research Authority in Zambia. The Associate will participate in activities designed to develop a functional national health research system. This includes helping to build the capacity for statistical and data analysis support to the Authority. The Associate will report to the Deputy Director, Research Promotion and Regulation at NHRA and help coordinate various research activities, including research data management in general and as well as data related to epidemics outbreak responses in the country.

About

The National Health Research Authority is a regulatory body that was established under the National Health Research Act No. 2 of 2013. The mandate of the Authority derived from the Act is to enforce ethical standards in the conduct of health research. The Authority is also responsible for coordination, financing, determining priority research topics, and capacity building for health research.

Responsibilities

  • Planning/design of research studies in view of trends in epidemiological incidences
  • Develop different data collection tools and offer supervisory support during data collection activities of studies
  • Provide and assist with data analysis and interpretations
  • Support research report writing
  • Offer support in terms of epidemic preparedness and response to institutions that directly respond to epidemics:
    • Initiate research by actively exploring research questions with available data
    • Analyze research findings to facilitate decision making
    • Offer statistical information from research that will help inform policy
    • Participate in monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of ongoing epidemic and outbreak response programs
    • Prepare activity and M&E reports as required and submit research activity reports
  • Data Management and Reporting: maintain an accurate and up-to-date database of all of the epidemiological incidences in the country and provide timely reports on the status of each activity. Maintain a database of all research conducted in the country
  • Capacity building and policy engagement programs: participate in the conceptualization, design, and implementation of research capacity building and policy engagement programs
  • Additional: participate in other activities as requested by supervisor

Skills and Experience

Items indicated with an asterisk (*) are required

  • Bachelor’s degree*
    • Preferred: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in epidemiology, statistics or related health/math/social science field
  • Strong research background, including quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis*
  • Experience with scientific writing, as evidenced by past successful reports*
  • Experience in data management software like SPSS, SAS, STATA, MS Access and/or NVivo*
  • Experience with research proposal development and grant writing
  • Experience with capacity building initiatives
  • Experience in grant management, e.g. implementing proposed projects and/or reporting back to donors
  • Knowledge or familiarity with monitoring and evaluation
  • Familiarity with health research ethics
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment
  • Commitment to professional integrity and confidentiality
