POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the American International Health Alliance (AIHA) Zambia Country Director, the Adolescent Health Technical Consultant is responsible for supporting technical implementation of AIHA’s Adolescent Health and Development (AHD) Project in Zambia. Preferably based in Lusaka, the consultant will provide technical expertise on integrating adolescent health topics into pre- and in-service training curricula and implement AHD trainings and mentorships. The consultant will work in collaboration with AIHA, Children’s Place International (CPI), University of Michigan (UM), AIHA’s local partners and other national stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the technical review with local subject matter experts on existing curricula and training materials to: 1) inform new pre- and in-service AHD curricula on instructional design best practices and standard components in Zambian trainings; and 2) identify areas within existing curricula requiring ADH-related technical updates and best practices. Materials to review include but are not limited to:
    • MOH adolescent training materials and other adolescent health program courses
    • Curricula for health systems strengthening (HSS) and any competency-based curricula/training in use
    • Curricula for pre- and in-service trainings used by DSHS and the Secretariat
  • Review, provide feedback, and edit AHD curricula developed by CPI-UM with insight from technical review and specific to the Zambia context
  • Provide recommendations on updates to existing trainings and curricula with AHD topics and best practices
  • Assist with the development of competency-based assessments
  • Meet with key stakeholders at DSHS and ZDF facilities as needed
  • Attend regular Skype meetings with the full team including AIHA, CPI-UM, DSHS, and ZDF
  • Co-facilitate meetings to review adolescent health materials
  • Co-facilitate initial adolescent health training-of-trainers (TOT)
  • Facilitate subsequent adolescent health trainings after initial TOT
  • Provide continuing mentorships to DSHS and ZDF facilities
  • Work in close collaboration with AIHA Program Coordinator and CPI-UM

DELIVERABLES:

  • Report of recommendations on instructional design best practices and standard components in Zambia pre- and in-service curricula to be included in AHD curricula
  • Edited AHD curricula with comments and feedback incorporating elements from technical review and specific to the Zambia context
  • Report on AHD-specific recommendations to existing trainings and curricula
  • With CPI-UM, secure buy-in of AHD curricula from local partners
  • Training report of initial AHD TOT
  • Training report of subsequent trainings, as relevant
  • Mentorship report, as relevant

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in psychology, social work, or a related field (Master’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred, diploma with additional three years of relevant work experience acceptable).
  • At least five years of experience working in psychology, social work, or a related field preferred.
  • Background knowledge of psychology or human development and comfort working with this content.
  • At least three years of experience in leading the design, development and management of instructional design and materials development.
  • A master trainer or educator, preferably with experience implementing trainings related to child psychology or human development
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Able to provide work samples demonstrating expertise

SPECIFICATIONS:

Duration of Assignment: The assignment is anticipated to be conducted within a six-month period with the possibility of an extension.
