In March 2013, First Quantum Minerals acquired Inmet Mining Corporation, a Canadian-based mining company primarily producing copper and zinc from mines in Finland, Spain and Turkey, with also a major copper deposit under development in Panama, known as Cobre Panama. The combination of the First Quantum and Inmet assets has created one of the world’s leading copper producers with a geographically diversified portfolio of high-quality operations and development projects in eight countries across five continents.
With a strategic plan to produce more than 1 million tonnes per annum of copper within five years, the Company is poised to become the largest, widely-held pure-play copper producer and one of the top five copper producers in the world.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Communications Function:
- Assist in the communication of FQM Zambia’s social investment vision, voice and values to an internal and external audience.
- Management of local PR staff and external media teams regarding quality, timeframes and professionalism of content creation deliverables.
- Development of templates and style guidelines to foster consistency in FQM social investment publications and presentations.
- Collaborate with external media and PR teams, Foundation managers and FQM Operations team in the creation of content-development strategies for various targeted audiences.
- Collaborate with external media and PR teams, Foundation managers and FQM Operations team in the organisation of distribution of content.
- Provide advice and input into content development and creative campaigns by other teams.
Content Creation Production:
- Regular creation and illustration of FQM Zambia’s social and environmental success stories through the use of mixed media (writing, photography, video) formats.
- Collaborate with external media teams in the dissemination of these stories through varied media channels.
- Development and management of monthly editorial diary, overseeing uniform and pertinent coverage of topical social investment themes as guided by Foundation Managers and FQM Operations team.
Digital marketing:
- Assistance with packaging and conversion of in-house content into concise and appealing digital online content for dissemination through external and internal FQM CSR channels.
- Production of SE-optimised posts for social media channels: Facebook / Instagram / Linked In
- Creation of FQM Zambia CSR Blog which can be linked to FQM global website
Supporting Role to PR staff
- Advice, mentoring and training of local PR staff in writing, photography, editing and packaging of stories.
- Management of local PR staff content submissions.
- Creation and running of workshops to enable and empower staff to report in-house on their own projects.
- Short and long-term development of a sustainable content-production system at Kalumbila and Kansanshi based on in-house staff creating regular valuable, engaging, clean and professional copy and photography.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Media, Journalism or Communications
Experience required:
- Minimum 10 years of professional media experience in journalism or media production.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in production and editing of corporate editorial media.
- Professional photography experience with experience in corporate editorial photography, portrait and events photography.
- Experience in the editing of in-house publications, technical corporate publications, online digital magazines
- Experience in design conceptualisation and production of in-house publications, technical corporate publications, online digital magazines.
- Proficient writer and editor with experience in writing, researching and reporting on regional social and environmental issues.
- Digital marketing experience with knowledge of Search Engine Optimisation, and production of content for online platforms (blogs, social media channels).
Skills needed:
- Conscientious attention to detail.
- Self-driven and creative person with excellent interpersonal, leadership and management skills.
- Proficient writer (minimum 5 years’ experience). Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, specifically the ability to grasp, digest and communicate specialised information surrounding sensitive themes to external audiences in a clear and effective manner.
- Proficient editor
- Professional photographer (minimum 10 years’ experience).
- Professional photo editor
- Competent graphic designer.
Technical Skills:
- Strong computer skills and working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and Adobe InDesign
- Extensive knowledge of professional camera equipment including on-location lighting equipment
- Mac-based knowledge and experience.
- Basic video editing skills using Apples Final Cut Pro X and Apple’s Motion 5.
- Graphic Design skills using Adobe InDesign CC.
- Experience with web-content management tools.
