First Quantum Minerals Ltd. has grown from a small mineral operation in Zambia into a multinational mining business in less than two decades, with a global portfolio of copper and nickel assets in Europe, Africa, Australia and South America. In March 2013, First Quantum Minerals acquired Inmet Mining Corporation, a Canadian-based mining company primarily producing copper and zinc from mines in Finland, Spain and Turkey, with also a major copper deposit under development in Panama, known as Cobre Panama. The combination of the First Quantum and Inmet assets has created one of the world’s leading copper producers with a geographically diversified portfolio of high-quality operations and development projects in eight countries across five continents.

With a strategic plan to produce more than 1 million tonnes per annum of copper within five years, the Company is poised to become the largest, widely-held pure-play copper producer and one of the top five copper producers in the world.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

OPERATIONAL FOCUS:

The Superintendent HR will be expected to add value by:

  • Assisting the Manager HR in the operational planning process;
  • Aligning the operation of the HR Department with the company objective;
  • Performing in a manner that will add measurable and quantified value to the organization.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:

Assist Manager HR to:

  • Develop, implement and maintain company HR policies and procedures;
  • Apprise management on HR issues impacting on the organization including changes in the legislative environment.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

  • Assist Manager HR and render advise on legal and industry requirements relating to the administration of salaries;
  • Assist in the maintenance of the company’s general conditions of employment;
  • Assist Manager HR in the implementation and maintenance of job grading systems.

INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS:

  • Articulate industrial relations issues proactively and communicate with staff and union representative effectively so as to promote sound and effective relations in order to foster an atmosphere conducive for productivity. Also anticipate factual Industrial relations problems and highlights such problems to management.
  • Attend to all disciplinary related matters in accordance with the disciplinary procedures while adhering to the laws of natural justice.
  • Coordinate meetings with unions and/or Line Managers and provide HR related support to specific work related issues.
  • Attend to all court cases in the absence of the HR Manager.
  • Take part in the negotiation processes and provide information as may be needed by the HR Manager.

MANPOWER ADMINISTRATION AND HR INFORMATION SYSTEMS:

  • Effective and efficient administration of periodic reporting systems and Ensure that manpower service and information systems are put in place for effective use in accordance with customer requirements.
  • Assist management to administer the company’s recruitment policy as well as in the development of strategies for recruitment, selection and retention of staff.
  • Coordinate the implementation of HR systems.
  • Provide support in the management of internships and students attachment.
  • Facilitate manpower forecasts and establishment control to ensure that the company has optimal staff numbers
  • Develop and implement a relevant qualifications policy for all positions

PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT:

  • Develop performance contracts for all subordinates.
  • Provide support, coaching and conduct performance appraisals for all subordinates.
  • Provide performance appraisal results to the HR Manager.

GENERAL HR ADMINISTRATION:

  • Provide general oversight of the operations of the HR Department.
  • Provide periodic reports for the HR department for the attention of the HR Manager.
  • Attend the Head of Departments meeting in the absence of the HR Manager.
  • Participate in the annual departmental planning, budgeting and periodic forecasts.

TRAINING:

  • Establish training needs of subordinates.
  • Coordinate the training function for the department.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources/Industrial Psychology or equivalent
  • A minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience ideally in labour intensive and unionized environment. (Exposure at a senior management level position will be an added advantage).
  • A good knowledge of Zambian labour laws is a prerequisite.
  • Previous mining experience is added advantage
  • Experience in manpower planning, recruitment, retention, employee relation, remuneration and employee benefits, training and development, organizational development, change management and business process enhancement.
  • Member of ZIHRM.
