Ongoing Recruitment at National Institute for Scientific And Industrial Research

The National Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research (NISIR) was established by Statutory Instrument No. 73 of 1998 pursuant to the Science and Technology Act No. 26 of 1997 of the Laws of Zambia to spearhead Research and Development (R&D) activities in order to promote and accelerate sustainable socio-economic growth in the country.

NISIR is looking for suitably qualified and experienced Twelve(12) Research Scientists/Research Assistants to fill vacant positions at its three (03) campuses in Lusaka, Kitwe and Chilanga.

To conduct research in their specific scientific fields of experience.

• Produce high quality scientific and/or industrial research project proposals in their area of specialization.
• Plan, organize and conduct scientific research studies of a high scientific scope and complexity.
• Carry out national development-relevant scientific and/or industrial research in their area of specialization.
• Present research findings to experts and community.
• Make independent decisions in their specific fields.
• Serve as advisors to other lower level scientists conduction studies in their specific scientific fields of expertise.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Grade 12 Certificate or its equivalent from recognized secondary/high school.
• BSc in Organic Chemistry, Plant Agronomy, Biotechnology, Tissue Culture/Plant Genetics, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Molecular Biology/Microbiology and/or Genetics, Animal Nutrition, Veterinary Science and Reproductive Physiology (animal).
• PhD and/or MSc and Scientific research experience will be added advantage.

JOB TITLE: Research Scientist

1. MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To generate Scientific knowledge in a particular field of study, develop technology and transfer the gained knowledge, developed technology to industry and community.

2. MAIN DUTIES OF THE JOB

• Develop and write highly bankable scientific and/or industrial research project proposals in your area of specialization.
• Carry out national development-relevant scientific and/or industrial research in your area of specialization.
• Carry out research in collaboration with other research teams, centers or external collaborators when the need arises.
• Produce and submit quarterly and annual technical reports of your research activities outputs within a stipulated time frame.
• Publish at least one paper in a reputable journal in your field of specialization every 2 years based on the research carried at NISIR.
• Ensure adherence to laboratory safety practices.
• Fully comprehend and respond to the short, medium and long term research-related needs of the country as expressed in various national documents such as the Seventh National Development (7NDP) and/or Vision 2030.
• Actively participate and assume leadership where necessary in any other plant science-related research projects currently being executed by NISIR.
• Ensure compliance with institutional and international (ISO/IEC 17025) quality assurance practices and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
• Render any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor to enhance and/or promote the function of NISIR.

3. ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS

• Education Form V/Grade 12 certificate.
• Vocational Training MSc Degree in a relevant Scientific/Technology field (or equivalent).PhD in a relevant Scientific/Technology field ( or equivalent). Will be added advantage.

JOB TITLE: Research Assistant

1. MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To generate Scientific knowledge in a particular field of study, develop technology and transfer the gained knowledge, developed technology to industry and community.

2. MAIN DUTIES OF THE JOB

• Fully comprehend the short, medium and long term research specific related needs of the country as expressed in various national documents such as Seventh National Development Plan (7NDP) and/or the Vision 2030.
• Actively participate in research projects currently being executed by the Research team, including proposal development, sampling, analysis of samples, record keeping and maintenance of laboratory hygiene.
• In the absence of research scientists, produce and submit to the appropriate authority quarterly and annual technical reports of your research within the stipulated time.
• Ensure compliance with institutional and international (ISO/IEC 1725) quality assurance practices.
• Ensure adherence to laboratory safely practices.
• Enhance your academic status within a period of two years
• Any other duties as may be assigned by your supervisor to enhance and/or promote the function of the Institution.

3. ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS

• Education Form V/Grade 12 certificate.
• Vocational Training BSc in a relevant Scientific/Technology field (or equivalent).
• Relevant Pre-job Experience Three (3) years post-qualification experience with wide experience in research, experimental and development work.

Exceptional candidates with qualifications and experience coupled with certain skills who demonstrate the potential to fully comprehend and respond to their research field related needs as expressed in various national documents such as the National Development Plan may be considered for more senior positions.
