Project Summary

Pact is launching a pilot programme to develop a proof of concept/business case for cobblestone paving as an alternative to tarmacking in certain environments in Zambia. Part of the project will involve establishing a pilot cooperative of pavers and linking them to business opportunities. Pact believes the project could be transformational in raising the profile of cobblestone paving as a more cost-effective, sustainable and environmentally friendly way to surface many roads in Zambia (particularly in CBDs, compounds, public buildings such as hospitals and universities etc.).

Position Summary: To develop and market a business case for cobblestone paving in Zambia, support the establishment and capacity of a paving cooperative, and manage a pilot road paving project.

Key Responsibilities:

  • In conjunction with Pact Zambia and Pact Mines to Markets staff, develop a proof of concept/business case for cobblestone paving of roads in Zambia;
  • Market and promote cobblestone paving through coordinating advocacy workshops, and preparing promotional media (print and film);
  • In conjunction with relevant Pact staff, support the capacity development, economic strengthening, and formalization of a pilot cobblestone paving cooperative;
  • Support the pilot cooperative to secure commercial contracts;
  • In conjunction with the pilot cooperative and relevant Pact staff, review and optimize cobblestone paving techniques;
  • To compile reports on project progress in line with requirements from Pact HQ.

Person Profile:
Essential skills and experience (please do not apply if you do not meet these criteria):

  1. Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline (e.g. civil or construction engineering, business management, development studies).
  2. Has completed the course in cobblestone paving technology.
  3. Experience in road construction methods and equipment used in Zambia;
  4. Experience in marketing and business planning;
  5. Experience managing, training and leading a team;
  6. Good written and spoken English, and interpersonal skills

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Experience in small-scale quarrying, mining, and stone chiseling;
  • Has worked for an international non-governmental organization (NGO).
