Project Coordinator Job: St John Zambia


St John Zambia is an international non-profit charitable organization that is part of the Order of St John.  In Zambia we provide first aid, ambulance and primary health care services through St John volunteers who form the base of most activities.  We are seeking the following staff to be part of a team to implement a project on reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health called Mama Na Mwana. This low cost, high impact programme relies on community volunteers and will help to improve community healthcare especially for mothers and babies.

St John Zambia, Mama Na Mwana Programme

REPORTS TO: National Coordinator 

JOB PURPOSE:  To be responsible for the effective management of the Mama Na Mwana Programme

SPECIFIC DELIVERABLES:

Programme delivery and management

Ensure the smooth running of the programme according to agreed workplans and budgets. This includes ensuring workplan deliverables such as:

Training of volunteers by appropriate resource people

Home visits by volunteers according to standard guidelines

Linkages between the project and relevant services, including health services

Referrals to services made by the project and follow-up with households back in the community

Coordinate the implementation of project activities to ensure they take place as planned and to an acceptable level of quality

Ensure the programme complies with any requirements from donors or other requirements

Volunteer recruitment, training, retention and management

  • Ensure systems are in place for managing the work of volunteers, such as volunteer job descriptions, schedules, and reviews of volunteers’ activities and the quality of their work

Planning, monitoring, evaluation and learning

  • Manage the Mama na Mwana programme’s system for monitoring, evaluation and learning, and work with relevant staff to ensure reports are complete and on time
  • Complete necessary reports on programme progress, including implementation and spending, and review with the National Coordinator on a monthly basis or more often as required
  • Collaborate with relevant staff to ensure monitoring and reporting activities are implemented on time and provide the required information
  • Contribute to workplans and budgets in accordance with priorities of St John Zambia and any external grant commitments

Partnerships and collaboration

  • Participate in the identification of partners and networking with key players in reproductive health, maternal, newborn and child health

Technical oversight and input

  • Contribute to the organisation’s overall efforts for achieving the desired quality and having an impact on reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health

QUALIFICATION AND SKILLS

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Community Development, Health or related field with at least three (3) years of experience
  • Good understanding of the current Zambian Health Sector and Service Orientation
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate people and have a proactive approach to ensure that systems and information flows are effective
  • Ability to work with local communities, local leaders, Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and Government institutions
  • Ability to work with volunteers and ensure adequate recruitment, retention and training
  • Good oral communication, report writing and presentation skills
  • Self-motivated and the ability to work with minimum supervision
