Exploration Africa-Europe is building a strong technical team in Zambia to undertake the safe prospecting and technical evaluation of potential copper developments within the region. Initial prospecting activities will include geological mapping, drilling and resource modelling; complemented with community and environmental characterisation work.

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

In complementing this team, exciting opportunity exists for an Operations Superintendent to coordinate, deliver and supervise operational and logistical support services and resources across multiple projects so that all support facilities and services are provided for safe and effective field operations. It is essential that you are based in Zambia and have rights to work locally as the role will be FIFO (fly in, fly out) out of Lusaka or DIDO (drive in, drive out) to camp on a 4 week on: 2 week off rotation in the field.

Responsibilities Include

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES (among others)

  • Identify operational support and logistics requirements and priorities for projects with reference to existing annual operational support, logistics and related business plans
  • Coordinate the provision of operational support and logistics services to meet identified project requirements
  • Coordinate training and induction processes for RTX staff and contractors at a site level ensuring understanding and commitment to comply with Rio Tinto HSEC standards, procedures and regulatory requirements
  • Provide leadership at a site and project level in implementing effective HSEC processes
  • Liaise with the local community and other operational support and logistics staff to identify contacts and develop networks of competent suppliers and contractors to facilitate the delivery of services as required
  • Undertake procurement and purchasing activities to acquire equipment, parts, materials and contractors
  • Provide assistance in monitoring budgets and reporting on expenditure
  • Implement proper processes for the management and maintenance of vehicles and equipment at a site level using internal and external resources
  • Collaborate with the exploration project teams to understand project requirements and operational support and logistics service needs
  • Work with other operational support and logistics staff within the District to exchange information, share knowledge and coordinate/optimise support and logistics practices and resources across the District
  • Supervise junior operational support and logistics staff and contractors and develop and optimise the capability of the local workforce through recruitment, training, coaching, and performance management practices.
  • Foster teamwork between operational support and logistics staff and ensure staff operate consistently with Rio Tinto values and expected behaviours.

Minimum Requirements

  • 5 – 10 years relevant experience in establishing and managing camps, operating in isolated and/or remote, field-based environments.
  • Relevant trade certificate is desirable
  • Relevant heavy equipment certificate is desirable
  • Proficient in English and a local language
  • Computer literate on MS Word & Excel – basic
  • Full driving license with 4 x 4 wheel drive training advantageous
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong and productive working relationships with a wide range of people including within a cross-cultural, multi-language environment.
  • Understanding of and commitment to health, safety and environmental sustainability practices within the workplace
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety requirements relevant to a field-based exploration environment

The incumbent will be expected to have the following competencies;

  • Sound interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Basic bookkeeping skills
  • Supervisory skills to develop and coordinate staff undertaking varied tasks, with the ability to develop service-oriented teams and manage external contractors.
  • Sound problem solving and troubleshooting skills able to be applied to a range of operational problems
  • Ability to provide leadership, advice and guidance regarding health and safety matters at camp/site level.
