The mandate of Rio Tinto Exploration (RTX) is to grow the value of Rio Tinto by discovering or acquiring resources that can become future Tier 1 mines. The objective of RTX is to safely discover on average, one Tier 1 resource each year. This is achieved through the effective application of Geoscience techniques and processes whilst taking into account HSEC, economic, commercial and political factors.

Job Title: Senior Geologist, Project Generation

We are seeking an experienced and self-motivated individual to join our team in Zambia in the capacity of Senior Project Geoscientist.

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Reporting to the Zambia Programme Manager, as the Senior Project Geoscientist, you will be responsible for generating a pipeline of new opportunities in order to improve the overall quality of the Zambian exploration project portfolio. The role is also required to provide technical support to the current projects.

JOB OBJECTIVES

  • Acquire and integrate regional and local datasets, undertake reviews at the national archives and incorporate latest thinking on sedimentary copper deposit geology to identify the most prospective ground in Zambia, leading to proactive, aggressive targeting
  • Monitor competitor activity, identify the best emerging opportunities and initiate technical engagement
  • Review and make recommendations on third party submittals
  • Provide technical support and coaching to Zambian project teams
  • Work with regional and global internal consultants to advance thinking on vectors to mineralisation and exploration methodologies for sedimentary copper deposits
  • Manage all HSEC, assurance and compliance related activities by setting and monitoring objectives to ensure standards are met.

TECHNICAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • A passion for exploration and discovery
  • An in-depth knowledge of sedimentary hosted copper deposits, including geology, vectors to mineralisation and exploration methodologies
  • A strong background in the Zambian geological and exploration environments
  • An ability to apply an understanding of the technical, legal, commercial, economic, community and corporate drivers that impact the identification and delivery of successful projects

    Strong analytical skills in the area of multi-disciplinary data integration and interpretation

  • Good report writing skills with the ability to make clear, concise recommendations
  • An ability to identify and implement value adding innovation and creative approaches
  • Ability to engage appropriately and influence a range of internal and external stakeholders

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Tertiary qualification in geoscience
Minimum 6 years’ relevant experience in exploration, with particular focus on sedimentary copper systems.

Highly proficient in English (verbal and written)

Driving licence

Commitment to safe work practices.
