    About

    The Rwanda Zambia HIV Research Group (RZHRG) has been a global leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS for more than 25 years, supporting prevention programs and research at its sites in Ndola and Lusaka, Zambia (Zambia Emory HIV Research Project) and in Kigali, Rwanda (Project San Francisco). RZHRG is committed to supporting Couples Voluntary Counseling and Testing (CVCT) as an effective and economical way to decrease HIV/AIDS transmission throughout southern Africa. Operating from Emory University, RZHRG programs include couples voluntary counseling and testing, couples family planning and counseling with the provision of long acting reversible contraceptives; research among key populations; data management and analysis; molecular work in the laboratories; and financial and administrative management. Much of the work RZHRG conducts relies on collaboration with local and international organizations.

    Zambia Emory HIV Research Project (ZEHRP) has been conducting HIV/AIDS research and providing clinical care and counseling for HIV-infected persons for more than 15 years. The ZEHRP sites in Lusaka and Ndola include medical clinic, laboratories, pharmacy, data management, and administration departments. It employs more than 50 Zambian medical and support staff and four expatriate interns and project coordinators. ZEHRP has rapidly expanded CVCT procedures throughout Zambia and improved access to Family Planning methods. Since 2004, through a partnership with International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, ZEHRP has participated in multiple protocols and clinical trials related to AIDS vaccine development.

    Position Overview

    An estimated 70-90% of sexually transmitted HIV infections in sub-Saharan Africa occur in couples who don’t realize that one partner is HIV positive and the other is HIV negative. Couples Voluntary Counseling and Testing (CVCT) has been proven to reduce the transmission of HIV/AIDS by more than two-thirds among those couples who don’t share the same HIV status.

    The HIV Program Coordinator will fill the role of a mid-level manager in the well-regarded CVCT department, training service providers, recruiting clients, and supporting program activities. In addition, the coordinator will collaborate with the financial administration, project management, and human resource management departments to ensure that project deliverables are met. In addition, they serve as an important liaison between the Principal Investigator and staff at Emory University and the field sites.

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health or related field*
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in public health or related field
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, and Access, with aptitude and ability to learn new software*
  • Good written and communication skills*
  • Good time management and organization skills*
  • Ability to multi-task; ability to manage a multi-faceted project and keep numerous channels of communication going at once*
  • Ability to work with a multicultural workforce*
  • Training experience
  • Previous work experience with financial oversight, project management, and/or data analysis is highly desirable
  • Minimum of one years of experience with Statistical Analysis System (SAS)
  • Previous international experience a plus

    During the fellowship year, all fellows are provided with:

  • A living stipend of $700/month

  • An award of $1500 upon successful completion of the fellowship year

  • *Note: The living stipend and the completion award may be paid out in USD or local currency, as determined by the placement organization.

    Living and Working in Zambia: Fellows are provided with housing and utilities during the fellowship year. Housing arrangements vary based on the placement organization and location within the country and are subject to change. All housing will meet GHC safety standards. Common types of housing include apartment, house, or living compound, and fellows may be housed with other fellows or colleagues. Accommodations are basic but comfortable, situated in an urban center.
