Role objective

Ensuring that the procedures for the admission and departure of children into and from the SOS Children’s Village are properly followed. Further provides advice, guidance, and support to the SOS Mothers and works closely with them to plan appropriate programmes for the development of each child.

Key tasks and responsibilities

a) Makes sure that Child Admission and Departure Procedures are Followed

  • Assesses and evaluates all available information on children for admission into the SOS Children’s Village. May carry out field research of individual cases wherever necessary.
  • Puts forward those children fulfilling the admission criteria for consideration by the Village admissions Committee.
  • Prepares and consults with other staff members and the children within the Village, with a view to the reception and integration of new children into the village.
  • Ensures that all the child admission and departure policies and procedures of the Association are followed.

b) Ensures that the Basic Needs of Each Village Child are Addressed

  • Works with the SOS Mothers to assess the physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual needs of each child
  • Develops an appropriate plan of action, with the child’s SOS Mother and Family Based Care Coordinator to meet the needs of the child and to guide him to become a well-balanced individual
  • Provides children with individual counseling whenever necessary.
  • Seeks the support of other welfare organizations, social workers, and other specialists, in matters concerning the children, wherever appropriate.
  • Works closely with the SOS Mothers to monitor each child’s progress.

c) Supports the SOS Mothers

  • Liaises with the SOS Mothers concerning their SOS children. Provides advice, guidance, and support with regard to problems experienced by the Mothers.
  • Provides mothers with individual counseling wherever necessary

d) Is Contributing Member of the Village Team

  • Provides advice, guidance, and support to the other members of the team in matters relating to the Mothers and children.
  • Assists the Family Based Care Coordinator with the discussion and completion of SOS Mothers’ performance appraisals.
  • Attend management meetings and assist with general administration duties as required.

e) Maintains Expert Knowledge on Social Work Issues

  • Keeps up-to-date with social work issues. In particular, keeps informed of current trends in childcare, through publications, courses, training, and workshops.
  • Develops Good Relations with State Welfare Authorities and Other External Bodies
  • Liaises with the relevant state welfare authorities in the referral and admission of children into the SOS Children’s Village.
  • Promotes a good working relationship with the state welfare authorities.
  • Develops good relations within other organizations and individuals involved in the field of social welfare (e.g. psychologists), who may provide services to the Village.

f) Performs Detailed Administrative Tasks

  • Supplies all necessary information and documentation to the state welfare authorities, other Village staff and the National co-ordination Office, as and when required.
  • Pays particular attention to the processing of child registration documents, progress reports and departure notices for the International Sponsorship Programme. These must be completed promptly.

g) Is the Mother Training Coordinator

  • Organises the training programme for mothers
  • Identifies training needs of mothers and arranges for appropriate facilitators for the training programme
  • Ensures that all the logistical arrangements for the mother and other staff training programmes are in place
  • Promotes In-Service Training for mothers

h) Spearheads the Scholarship Programme for the HG school and the Kindergarten

  • Chairs the Initial Screening Committee. Involved in the identification of candidates for the scholarship programme
  • Identifying prospective candidates through Social Institutions like Churches, Community NGOs, and individual cases
  • Compiling documentation on each case and following up incomplete or unclear information

i) Regular visits to families in the communities

  • Ensure good case management and approaches for children in alternative care which includes integrated families.
  • Performs any other reasonable and lawful duties, as assigned by supervisor

Reporting lines

  • Reports directly to the Family Based Care Coordinator- Livingstone

Qualifications and experience

  • Full Grade 12 School Certificate with a minimum of a Degree in Social Work
  • At least not less than two (2) years of work experience with child care and development programmes
  • Member of the Social Workers Association of Zambia (SWAZ)
  • Good understanding of SOS Family Based Care operations
