1.1 General background

SOS Children Villages Zambia is a child welfare and developmental Organization which provides long term family based care and family strengthening services to children who have lost parental care and those at risk of losing parental care respectively. SOS Children’s Villages Zambia operates in four locations of Lusaka, Kitwe, Livingstone, and Chipata supporting 760 children in the Family Based Care (FBC) programmes and 8,400 children, 1,790 care-givers and 1,217 young adults through the Family Strengthening Programmes (FSP) working in 21 communities.

 

1.2 The Family Strengthening Programme

The family strengthening is a community-based child care programme aimed at preventing child abandonment. The Programme main focus is Community empowerment and Family Empowerment, building capacities of Community Support Systems and Families to able to care and protect their children by economically empowering vulnerable households, programme participants, to engage in sustainable income generating activities (IGAs).

The Programme aim at ensuring that families become self-reliant and develop strong resilience to continuously take care of their children over a period of time after exiting the programme. The Programme has a focus on individual and group micro-businesses.

In order to achieve this SOS Children’s Villages Zambia is seeking the services of a consultant to undertake a market survey in Family Strengthening locations of Lusaka, Kitwe, Livingstone, and Chipata.

2. Purpose of the Assignment

  1. To undertake a market study of economic empowerment interventions such as Income Generating Activities (IGAs) that is currently being employed for programme participants to make them become self-reliant with a sustainable household income base.
  2. To provide insight on the needs of programme participants so as to inform on viable business ventures
  3. To identify sustainable approaches for effective implementation of Income Generating Activities support
  4. To inform areas of capacity building for programme participants in enhancing their business skills.
  5. To provide recommendations to SOS children’s villages Zambia on future programming.

3. Scope of the Assignment

  1. Assess the relevance; appropriateness and effectiveness of IGAs interventions in empowering programme participants towards becoming self-reliant.
  2. Assess the marketability of the products vis-a-vis competition
  3. Assess the capacity of participants to undertake the such activities
  4. Assess the sustainability of the interventions

5. Expected outputs

The successful consultant(s) shall be expected to deliver the following in order for SOS Children’s Villages Zambia to make informed decisions;

  1. The final output of the consultancy will be a comprehensive Report on the Market Study detailing the findings and the recommendations for action.
  2. The report should specifically identify the following:
    • Knowledge, attitudes, and practices on entrepreneurship by the target group
    • Report on entrepreneurship skills, demand, and gaps in IGAs
    • Report on existing market
    • Report on opportunities
    • Gender, age, youth and disability inclusiveness

 

6. Expected Deliverables

  • Draft report on soft copy presented for review
  • 5 bound hard copies of the final report

7. Timeframe of the Assignment

The successful consultant(s) shall be engaged for the duration of 4 weeks to undertake the task. Expected start date-week beginning 19th November, 2017-15th December 2017

8. Qualifications, experience, and skills

  • At least a master’s degree, in a relevant discipline
  • Proven research and economic analysis experience, including 5 years of working experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of the entrepreneurship and livelihoods sector specifically as it relates to micro enterprises at family and community level
  • Good understanding of local communities
  • Ability to produce well written, analytical reports (share proof of having written market survey report)
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills (share 2 examples of data analysis you have done)
  • Ability to speak and understand local languages in our target communities will be an added advantage (state which major local languages you are fluent at)
  • Abreast knowledge of local market trends in the country

i) Document one; Prepare your technical proposal detailing your technical consultancy proposition indicating your profile background, how you propose to carry out the assignment, sharing your professional work experience in term of what sought of market survey consultancy you have undertaken before (include your detailed CV plus a minimum of three traceable references) as well as your proposed work plan covering a duration of 4 weeks.

ii) Document two; prepare your financial proposal detailing all costs associated with this consultancy in terms of service fees, logistics, work materials/services, taxes etc.
