SOS Children’s Villages Zambia is a childcare and development non-governmental organization working in 134 countries. Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced persons to fill the under listed job positions.

1. POSITION

Village Nurse – Lusaka (1), and Chipata (1)

Role objective

Ensures the general health of all children under Alternative Family Care Programme and support of those from the Family Strengthening programme.

Key tasks and responsibilities

a) Ensures the Health of Children

  • Ensures that all children in the village are healthy and well nourished by conducting regular health checks (at least once every three months)
  • Organize training to promote health care awareness amongst Mothers, aunties, children and other SOS workers. Conducts seminars and training programmes designed to teach Mothers about nutrition, hygiene, etc.
  • Conducts a programme of preventative health care including regular weighing and immunization for all children below 5 years at SOS
  • Thoroughly examine and reports upon all children newly admitted to the SOS Children’s Village. Advises and monitors Family Based Care Coordinator, SOS Mothers, and Aunties on treatment for malnourished and those children with special conditions
  • Ensures that children at SOS receive prompt and appropriate medical care whenever necessary. Also provides medical care and advice to Mothers and other staff at SOS where necessary
  • Whilst maintaining a good relationship with neighboring health facilities; Refers more serious cases to the appropriate medical facility
  • Manage a dispensary for the village; for easy access to non-prescription drugs.

b) Promotes the Health of SOS Staff & children within Other SOS Projects

  • May conduct health-related courses or seminars for Village Staff as well as for staff and children of other SOS Projects.
  • Promote physical fitness of SOS Mothers, through exercise and a healthy diet
  • Attend to minor illnesses and ailments of SOS staff and children referred by other SOS Projects
  • Refers more serious medical cases to the appropriate medical facility

c) Provides Community Health Care & Education

  • Provides mothers and children with preventive and curative health care services. May advise and assist with family planning matters
  • May undertake visits in the local community to assist family strengthening community children and members with health-related matters

d) Maintains Expert Knowledge on Health Care Issues

  • Keep up-to-date with health care issues. Particular attention should be paid to those issues affecting mothers and children such as family planning and HIV/AIDS, nutrition and hygiene
  • Keep a stock of information materials regarding health-related issues for general use
  • Develop and implement family planning and HIV/AIDS awareness programmes

e) Acts as a Role Model for SOS Mothers and Children

  • Behave in an exemplary manner
  • Provide advice and support to older SOS girls

f) Develops Good Relations with External (health Care-Related) bodies & Individuals

  • Builds-up good relationships with external bodies and individuals, who may provide support for the SOS Clinic either financially or in the form of services provided. Such bodies and individuals include local state health authorities, public and private healthcare workers (doctors, dentists, and various specialists)

g) General

  • Performs any other reasonable and lawful duties as assigned by supervisor.

Reporting lines

  • Reports directly to the Family Based Care Coordinator

Qualifications and experience

  • Full Grade 12 certificate with at least 5 credits or Form 3 Certificate.
  • Minimum of 10 years progressive experience in a Nursing Position.
  • Zambia Enrolled (ZEN) or Registered Nursing (RN) Certificate
  • Active practicing license from the General Nursing Council of Zambia
  • Training and Practice in Psychosocial Counselling is a must
  • Experience with children related programmes/ projects in an NGO setting will be an added advantage
  • Own accommodation around SOS area in Great North Road will an added advantage.
