UNDERWRITING MANAGER
Meanwood General Insurance is a growing general insurance Institution in Zambia. The Company underwrites all classes of business in respect of general insurance and has a good branch network spread across the Country.
The Company is seeking to recruit a talented and experienced insurance professional to fill in the position of Underwriting Manager based in Lusaka and reporting the General Manager.
The Underwriting Manager shall be responsible for insurance underwriting management of all classes of general insurance. This person will oversee day-to-day operations of the underwriting unit, be accountable for the underwriting results of the business, responsible for coaching and development of the underwriting team and directly handle client, broker and agency relationships.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage risk approvals within authority while achieving the underwriting budget and service goals of the business
- Supervise the underwriting profitability of the business; underwriting and pricing of business and the identification of classes of business to be developed
- Interface with other functional support units in the company such as Claims, IT, and Finance to facilitate meeting the business objectives
- Drive the product development process of the company, including business development
- Assist in the performance of underwriting audits and perform internal Underwriting audits
- Develop policies, procedures and best practices
- Identify and develop training activities for new & existing employees
- Maintain a high level of knowledge of current industry trends, issues & regulatory requirements
- Communicate on a timely basis with fellow underwriting professionals regarding issues of competition, legal decisions and other pertinent information relative to the insurance underwriting and/or claims area
- Develop premium goals and loss ratio targets for both Underwriters and agents
- Draw up quotes for competitive insurance premiums
- Negotiate and define the specific terms of insurance policies with brokers or policyholders
- Ensure regulatory compliance by following applicable insurance laws
- Mapping (Pre & Post) renewal Strategies for client retention and conduct presentations for products/services offered
Key Qualifications, Qualities & Competencies
- Degree in Insurance or related field
- ACII diploma
- At least five years of working experience in the General Insurance industry
- Proven general insurance underwriting experience
- Sensible judgment and attention to detail
- Confident decision-making skills
- Excellent knowledge of insurance policies and the ability to relate policy provisions to the loss exposures
- Proven numeracy and statistical skills
- Good knowledge of claims management
- Excellent report writing skills
- A goal-getter and Self Starter
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Power-point and Word.
- Team player
- In possession of a clean driving license
- Sales & marketing experience will be an added advantage
